Job Description:

Senior Industrial Designer II

Milwaukee Tool is seeking a Senior Industrial Designer II to join our in-house power tool design team. Their main duties center around new product development through the exploring form, operation, ergonomics and interactions between the user and the product or system. They will have the ability to work on a variety of highly complex projects in the Power and Plumbing & Electrical categories. The Senior Industrial Designer II will primarily work independently, but will also support Lead, Principal or Manager initiatives. They will provide direct mentorship and guidance to lower level designers. This role will report to the Lead Industrial Designer or ID Manager.

  • Lead concept generation through ideation, brainstorming, competitive assessments, and identification of unmet user needs.

  • Develop designs through paper and digital sketching, renderings, advanced 3D CAD surfacing and rendering, and physical mock-ups and 3D printed models.

  • Communicate the design intent through visual storytelling to gain acceptance by project team.

  • Drive collaboration with cross-functional teams, primarily marketing and engineering, to deliver designs based on established criteria.

  • Create the documentation necessary to convey the design solution to management or cross functional partners through renderings, models, and written reports.

  • Present designs for milestone approval to ID, marketing and engineering leadership.

  • Evaluate and apply fundamentals of ergonomics and usability to the product solution.

  • Participate in internal research downloads, review of research reports and participation of hands-on activities related to projects. Occasionally participate in observational job site visits to gain understanding of user requirements. Collaborate with Design Research and Product Management teams to analyze and shape observations into valuable insights.

  • Determine construction, mechanisms, color, materials, surface finish and manufacturing processes in cooperation with other business functions that are involved in the new product development process.

  • Design in compliance with the Milwaukee visual brand language (VBL) guidelines.

  • Continually monitor design trends involving form, materials, technology etc.

  • Ability to grow into a subject matter expert contributing across project teams.

  • Directly oversee the project work of lower level designers. Provide mentorship to pass on best practices, learned experiences and organizational navigation.

  • Expected to work on several high complexity projects concurrently, while demonstrating agility during dynamic points of the project.

  • Monitor projects through preproduction stages and perform craftsmanship reviews to ensure detailing and design intent.

The TOOLS you'll bring with you:

  • BS, BA or BFA in Industrial Design

  • 7+ years of professional experience designing in a product development environment.

  • Have a thorough understanding of the industrial design process from concept to production.

  • Advanced user of 3D CAD, rendering, and Adobe Suite

  • Strong sketching and model making skills

  • Dynamic portfolio of product designs, demonstrating process through sketches, renderings, mock-ups, visual thinking, and CAD modeling.

  • Demonstrate the ability to collaborate in a team environment and handle multiple projects.

  • Exceptional professional communication skills.
