Job description

Job Overview

Eastern Panel Manufacturing Inc. is seeking a skilled Millwork Engineer & Estimator with strong drawing abilities to join our team. This role combines technical engineering, precise drafting/CAD modeling, and accurate cost estimation for custom architectural millwork, casework, cabinetry, and related woodwork projects in commercial, and institutional settings. The ideal candidate will translate architectural designs into production-ready drawings, ensure manufacturability and compliance with standards, and develop competitive, detailed cost estimates from bid documents. This position requires attention to detail, woodworking knowledge, and the ability to collaborate across design, sales, project management, and production teams

Estimation Duties

·         Review architectural drawings, specifications, RFPs, and bid documents to perform accurate quantity take-offs for custom millwork projects.

·         Prepare detailed cost estimates including materials (woods, veneers, hardware, finishes), labor hours, subcontractor costs, equipment usage, and overhead/profit margins.

·         Develop and submit competitive proposals, bid packages, and value engineering alternatives in a timely manner.

·         Analyze material pricing trends, supplier quotes, and market conditions to ensure cost accuracy.

·         Collaborate with clients, architects, general contractors, and internal teams to clarify scope, resolve discrepancies, and support negotiations.

Engineering & Drawing Duties

·         Interpret architectural and interior design plans to create detailed shop drawings, elevations, sections, and 3D models for custom millwork and casework.

·         Produce precise technical drawings, production documentation, and CNC-ready files using CAD software.

·         Engineer joinery details, material selections, hardware integration, and fabrication methods to ensure structural integrity, aesthetic quality, and efficient manufacturability.

·         Generate CNC programs, nesting layouts, panel saw patterns, and machining instructions as needed (experience with CNC workflows is a plus).

·         Ensure all drawings comply with industry standards (AWI, ANSI), building codes, and company quality requirements.

·         Revise drawings based on client feedback, field measurements, or production needs.

General Duties

·         Serve as a technical liaison between estimating, design, project management, and shop/production teams.

·         Support project handoff by providing clear documentation and addressing technical questions during fabrication and installation phases.

·         Participate in site visits for field verification, as-built measurements, or troubleshooting when required.

·         Maintain organized project files, revisions, and communication logs.

Required Qualifications & Skills

·         4+ years of experience in architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, or related woodworking field (combination of estimating and engineering/drafting experience strongly preferred).

·         Proven proficiency in preparing accurate millwork estimates and generating detailed shop drawings.

·         Drawing and drafting skills with expertise in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Mozaik, Cabinet Vision, or similar millwork-specific CAD/parametric software.

·         Understanding of woodworking materials, joinery techniques, hardware, finishes, and fabrication processes (CNC routing, edgebanding, etc.).

·         Blueprint/specification reading and interpretation abilities.

·         Mathematical and analytical skills for precise quantity take-offs and cost calculations.

·         Knowledge of AWI quality standards, architectural millwork practices, and commercial construction processes.

·         Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

·         Effective communication and collaboration skills (verbal and written).

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience programming or setting up CNC machines (routers, panel saws, etc.).

·         Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Wood Technology, or related field.

·         Prior experience in high-end commercial interiors, hospitality, healthcare, or custom residential millwork.

Proficiency in 3D modeling/rendering tools for client presentations
