Job description

Location: Detroit, MI


We are seeking an experienced Paint Process Engineer with a strong background in controls engineering, industrial automation, and automotive manufacturing to support paint shop operations at a Detroit manufacturing facility. This role will focus on improving paint processes, troubleshooting production and controls issues, optimizing equipment performance, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives in a high-volume manufacturing environment.

The ideal candidate combines hands-on paint process engineering knowledge with experience supporting PLC controls, automated equipment, and manufacturing systems.


Responsibilities

  • Support and optimize automotive paint processes to improve quality, productivity, reliability, and equipment performance.
  • Troubleshoot paint process, equipment, and controls systems issues affecting production.
  • Support PLC-controlled equipment, HMI systems, sensors, instrumentation, and automated manufacturing processes.
  • Analyze manufacturing problems and implement sustainable root cause corrective actions.
  • Monitor process parameters and identify opportunities for process optimization and improved paint quality.
  • Support equipment changes, process improvements, commissioning activities, and manufacturing launches.
  • Work closely with production, maintenance, controls, quality, and engineering teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Improve equipment uptime through preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability-focused engineering solutions.
  • Support continuous improvement, waste reduction, cycle-time improvement, and manufacturing efficiency initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, operating parameters, technical specifications, and engineering standards.
  • Assist with troubleshooting automated paint application and material-handling equipment.
  • Ensure engineering changes and process improvements align with plant safety, quality, and production requirements.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional experience in paint process engineering, manufacturing engineering, controls engineering, or a related industrial environment.
  • Experience with PLC programming, PLC troubleshooting, or automated control systems.
  • Knowledge of HMI, sensors, instrumentation, industrial networks, and automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex manufacturing equipment and production processes.
  • Strong understanding of root cause analysis, problem solving, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience working in a high-volume automotive manufacturing or similar industrial production environment preferred.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with production, maintenance, quality, and engineering teams.
  • Strong analytical, technical troubleshooting, communication, and project coordination skills.
  • Experience with paint shop automation, robotic systems, or automated paint application equipment is highly desirable.
