At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer II to join the Data Center Power and Control Team in New London, CT. The Mechanical Engineer II will be responsible for the design of new product mechanical components and assemblies, including product test validation. Working individually or as part of a design team to develop, evaluate and validate product designs and specifications. Also conducts design reviews, validates and approves documentation packages, preproduction builds and production transfer.

Provides mentor guidance and support to engineering team members across disciplines.

What Will You Do?

  • Provide direction and project management for mechanical design and test validation efforts. Work with Product Marketing, Manufacturing and other Engineering personnel during product conceptualization phases and throughout the project phases.
  • Work closely with Project Management to schedule, track and maintain up-to-date project schedules and milestone due-date requirements.
  • Provide maintenance of existing mechanical products and documentation (design improvements, VAVE cost savings etc.) and product databases through the Engineering Change process.
  • Design and develop mechanical systems and customized solutions, utilizing many methods such as injection molding, metal forming, casting and extrusion processes.
  • Utilize 2D and 3D SolidWorks CAD systems to perform detailed design analysis, including kinematic and kinetic, structural, thermal and finite element analysis methods.
  • Provide mechanical materials and tooling DFMA cost studies. Work with appropriate vendors to develop cost effective realization of design.
  • Works with Product Management to develop technical Product Requirements specifications and quality assurance protocols.
  • Initiate, lead, and participate in cross-functional mechanical design reviews with other engineering, manufacturing and marketing personnel.
  • Coordinates rapid-prototype validation requirements with internal Tooling Manager and Outside Design supplier.
  • Provides detailed test report summaries for all product test validation requirements.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required.

Required Skills

Education:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience required in product engineering or a related field; 5+ years preferred.
  • Strong background in mechanical design and/or mechanical systems; 4+ years preferred.
  • Manufacturing experience required, including exposure to production processes, cross-functional collaboration, or design for manufacturability.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Extensive experience with SolidWorks 2D/3D modeling software required
    • Enterprise PDM.
    • SolidWorks Professional Mechancial Design proficiency.
    • Product compliance and Environmental Process knowledge.
    • Utilization of DFMA tools to reduce product complexity and cost.

  • Must have strong computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and data base software, e-mail and meeting management software. Ability to use internet and web based resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Requires strong organizational and time management skills, close attention to detail and be-able-to effectively handle multiple priorities. Must possess excellent project management skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and manage to a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines and control a-number-of projects at various stages of work.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills and be-able-to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Must be an effective listener, able to extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information.
  • Must have strong scientific analytical skills and proven ability to efficiently research and summarize information in an effective manner and make recommendations based upon analysis.
  • Must be highly collaborative and able to work in a team based environment. Fosters open communication and support an environment of innovation and creative change.
  • Willing to travel as necessary.

Salary Range: $87,000 - $100,000/annually
