ABOUT BRUNTON:
Brunton is a heritage brand known for precision compasses that have been trusted by geologists, soldiers, surveyors, educators, and adventurers around the world since 1894. Brunton products set the global gold standard for quality, reliability, durability, and precision. Brunton has been manufacturing compasses with pride in Riverton, WY for over 50 years, and has been back under local ownership and leadership since 2021. Brunton is a woman-owned, geologist-led, family business that fosters a team atmosphere and positive working environment.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are looking for an Industrial Designer to help drive the development and continual improvement of manufacturable products for Bruntons outdoor, military, and geology lines. This is a hands-on role blending creativity, user-centered design, and technical product development in collaboration with leadership, manufacturing, marketing, and sales teams to manage the full product life cycle from concept to launch.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Continual Product Improvement:
  • Improve existing products through implementation of Product 360 review cycles with leadership team, turning customer feedback, warranty insights, field-use observations, and production team suggestions into meaningful product improvements
  • Create and document revised CAD/Solidworks drawings and specifications
  • Work closely with supply chain team to update items, drawings, Bills of Material (BOMs), and routings in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
  • Supply vendors with revised drawings in CAD and graphic design layout as needed
  • Work with production team on revising manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and quality, assisting with updates for production and quality control procedures
  • Redesign outdated or rebranded packaging with an eye for product protection, packaging functionality, eco-friendly materials, military or e-comm requirements, and brand aesthetic
Product Design & Development:
  • Help design products for our core user groups with function dictating design and material choices durability, precision, repairability, global field performance, simplicity, and long-term use are Bruntons cornerstones of design
  • Build CAD/Solidworks technical drawings, product assemblies, 3D renderings, specifications, and design documentation for new products
  • Work with supply chain team to push new parts out to multiple vendors for quotes and sample testing
  • Assist supply chain team in creating new Items, Assemblies, Bill of Materials and Routings for new products in ERP system
  • Participate in prototyping, testing, revision, and validation of new products
  • Work with production team on designing and scaling up efficient manufacturing processes for new products
  • Develop procedures for manufacturing, quality control, and testing for new parts and products
  • Design new product packaging
  • Support product launches with design assets, product knowledge, technical details
Branding:
  • Ensure that products align with Bruntons heritage, visual identity, core principles, and reputation for precision
  • Collaborate with marketing and creative teams on product visuals, packaging concepts, launch materials, and product storytelling
  • Help maintain a consistent design language across Brunton product families
  • Oversee design and production of branded gear line of apparel and other merchandise that is DTF transferred and dye sublimated in-house
Custom Program:
  • Serve as the point person for custom pad print or laser engraving projects, working with customers on design options and mockups
  • Work closely with sales team to ensure timely delivery of custom products and realistic cost estimates for quoting
  • Oversee pad print and laser operations to ensure that quality custom products are efficiently produced
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating successful product design, 3D modeling, prototyping, and packaging design
  • Proficiency in CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, with ability to create drawings, renderings, assemblies, and explosion diagrams
  • Proficiency in Adobe suite, especially Adobe Illustrator, with ability to create parts designs, packaging, mockups, and design presentations
  • Understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and mechanical design basics
  • Ability to balance creativity with manufacturing limitations, cost, and product performance
  • Strong communication, organization, and project management skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience designing outdoor gear, compasses, technical instruments, scientific tools, field equipment, or other hard goods
  • Experience with injection molding, CNC machining, textiles, plastics, metal fabrication, adhesives, or precision assemblies
  • Familiarity with product testing, quality control, and meeting product specifications
  • Experience with small business manufacturing settings
  • Interest in outdoor recreation, geology, military, navigation, surveying, survival skills, product repair, or traditional bushcraft
  • Experience designing products that must perform in rugged environments
  • Comfort working with low-level radioactive self-illumination vials containing tritium
  • Collaborative and positive team player who is able to take and give directions
  • Ambitious and self-driven with the ability to prioritize workflow based on timing and need
  • Prototype experience using new and old technologies, i.e. 3D printing as well as industrial machine shop tools
  • Experience working with ERP systems, especially NetSuite
