Packing Operator information

What is a packing operator?

A Packing Operator is a professional responsible for preparing products for shipment by packing them according to company and safety standards. Their duties include inspecting items for quality, operating packing machinery, labeling packages, and ensuring that all packages meet the required specifications. Packing Operators often work in warehouses, factories, or distribution centers and play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency of the supply chain. Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions are important skills for this role.

What are some common challenges packing operators face during high-volume production periods?

During high-volume production periods, Packing Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining speed and efficiency while ensuring product quality and accuracy. The fast-paced environment can lead to repetitive motion fatigue and increased likelihood of minor errors, so attention to detail and proper ergonomics are important. Effective communication with team members and quick problem-solving skills are essential to address unexpected equipment issues or supply shortages, ensuring production targets are met without compromising safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packing operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Packing Operator, you need attention to detail, physical stamina, basic math skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with packaging machinery, conveyor systems, and sometimes barcode scanners or inventory software is typically required. Reliability, teamwork, and the ability to follow safety protocols are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and accurate packaging processes, which are critical for maintaining product quality and meeting production targets.

What is the difference between Packing Operator vs Material Handler?

While both roles operate within warehouse and manufacturing environments, Packing Operators focus on preparing products for shipment by packing and assembling, whereas Material Handlers manage inventory movement and storage. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

How much does a packing operator earn?

A packing operator's average salary varies by location and experience but typically ranges from $12 to $20 per hour. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced operators with skills in machinery and quality control can earn higher wages, often with opportunities for overtime. Salaries can also be influenced by the industry and company size.

Job description

We're combining three of our entry-level production roles — Bakers Associate, Makeup Associate, and Packing Associate — into a single **General Production/Packing Associate** position. You'll be cross-trained to work in one or more of our production areas (mixing/make-up, oven/baking, or packing) based on business needs, giving you variety in your day and more opportunity to grow with us.
What You'll Do
- Perform assigned production duties at one or more workstations (mixing, dividing, moulding, panning, oven/proofer, depanning, or packing/packaging lines), as directed by your Foreperson or Supervisor.
- Follow the production schedule, formula cards, and order sheets to run product at the correct rates, temperatures, weights, and counts.
- Set up, monitor, and safely operate assigned equipment (mixers, dividers, moulders, ovens, baggers, slicers, Kwik Lok, and similar equipment) after training.
- Check product throughout the process to make sure it meets quality specs; report defects, shortages, or irregularities to your Foreperson or Supervisor right away.
- Keep accurate production records (counts, times, temperatures, and reconciliation reports as applicable to your area).
- Keep your workstation and work area clean and organized during and at the end of your shift; follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
- Assist other operators with changeovers, setups, and problem-solving as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
Physical Requirements
- Stand and walk on concrete surfaces for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs (team lifts or mechanical aids provided for heavier loads).
- Push/pull loaded racks, carts, troughs, or pallet jacks on level surfaces.
- Frequently bend, stoop, squat, reach overhead, and twist.
- Perform continuous, repetitive hand and arm motions at line speed.
- Work in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, flour dust, and moving equipment/powered industrial truck traffic.
What We're Looking For
- Willingness to learn and work safely in a fast-paced food manufacturing / bakery production environment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, schedules, and basic paperwork.
- Basic math skills (conversions, percentages, counts).
- Team player with good communication skills.
- Prior food production, bakery, or warehouse/packing experience is a plus, but not required — we train.
- Must be able to comply with all company safety rules, including required PPE (smock/apron, hard hat, slip-resistant footwear) and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
Schedule & Location
- Full-time; schedule varies by department and shift assigned.
- Location: Santa Ana, CA
