Packaging Production Scheduling information

What is packaging production scheduling?

Packaging production scheduling is the process of planning and organizing the sequence and timing of packaging operations in a manufacturing environment. It involves coordinating resources, materials, equipment, and labor to ensure that packaging runs are completed efficiently and on time. Effective scheduling helps meet production deadlines, optimize costs, minimize downtime, and ensure that finished goods are ready for shipment according to customer demands. This role often requires working closely with production managers, supply chain teams, and logistics to align schedules and resolve any bottlenecks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packaging production scheduler?

To thrive as a Packaging Production Scheduler, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in manufacturing or supply chain management are essential, often supported by a relevant degree or work experience. Familiarity with scheduling software (like SAP, Oracle, or ERP systems) and inventory management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability help professionals manage shifting priorities and coordinate across departments. These skills ensure efficient production workflows, minimize downtime, and support on-time delivery in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced in a packaging production scheduling role, and how can they be managed effectively?

One of the key challenges in Packaging Production Scheduling is balancing fluctuating demand with available production capacity, while minimizing downtime and ensuring timely delivery. Schedulers must coordinate closely with procurement, production, and logistics teams to handle unexpected changes, such as supply chain disruptions or last-minute order modifications. Effective use of scheduling software and proactive communication can help mitigate these challenges, ensuring both efficiency and flexibility in meeting client needs. Developing strong organizational and problem-solving skills is also essential for success in this role.

Job description

Every day, we get opportunities to make a positive impact - on our colleagues, partners, customers and society. Together, we're pioneering the solutions of the future and unlocking the full potential of precious resources. Trusted to act on initiative, we challenge conventional thinking to develop world-leading technologies that inspire progress in vital areas, including energy, food, water and shipping.
As we push forward, the innovative, open spirit that fuels our 140-year-old start-up culture and rapid growth also drives our personal growth. So, as we shape a more resourceful, less wasteful world, we build our careers too.
About the job:
As an integral member of our team, you will play a pivotal role being responsible for managing production schedules, coordinating with various departments, and ensuring timely delivery of products. Your expertise will help optimize our production processes and support our commitment to delivering high-quality products on schedule.
Currently, this is an onsite opportunity located in Richmond, VA.
As a part of the team, you will:
  • Manage EDI Inbox: Oversee and process incoming EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) messages to ensure accurate and timely order management.
  • Short-Term Scheduling: Coordinate daily and weekly production schedules for a 0-3-month horizon, ensuring alignment with customer demand and material availability.
  • Order Management: Firm new production orders, advising Planners on material constraints and potential issues.
  • Production Order Replanning: Replan existing production orders as needed, based on material arrivals and changes in order demand.
  • Delivery Capability Analysis: Analyze the capability to deliver products within a 0-3-month perspective, identifying risks and bottlenecks.
  • Continuous Improvement: Suggest and implement measures to secure expected production volumes and meet agreed lead times.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Planning, Sourcing and Production teams to ensure seamless execution of schedules. Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual journal entries and cost allocations

We care about diversity, inclusion and equity in our recruitment processes. We also believe behavioral traits can provide important insights into a candidate's fit to a role. To help us achieve this we apply Pymetrics assessments, and upon application you will be invited to play the assessment games.
What you know:
You have a Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, Operations, Business Administration, or equivalent experience in production scheduling, supply chain, or manufacturing environment and:
  • 3+ years of experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Proficiency with ERP/MRP, preferable on Dynamics 365 systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

At Alfa Laval, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive and dynamic workplace that values diverse perspectives and experiences. While we typically welcome applicants from all locations, currently, we are prioritizing candidates who reside in the US or have an established presence in the area.
What's in it for you?
We offer a challenging position in an open and friendly environment where we help each other to develop and create value. Your work will have a true impact on Alfa Laval's future success. Our benefits-eligible associates enjoy healthcare, dental and vision plans, a robust wellness program, generous 401(k), paid holidays, paid time off benefits, and more. At Alfa Laval, we carefully consider a wide range of factors to determine your total compensation package. We rely on market indicators and consider your specific job, background, skills, and experience to get it right. The base salary for this role is typically $85,000 - $95,000.
