Job description

The Packaging Engineer/Logistics Project Manager has a responsibility to design, develop, and establish packaging solutions and standards. This position will also be responsible to manage projects pertaining to improving warehouse infrastructure, material flow and warehouse system upgrades.

Responsibilities
  •  Level I:
  • Acquires job skills and learns policies, procedures and work instructions to complete routine tasks.
  • Works on assignments routine in nature, requiring limited judgement
  • Routinely interacts with cross-functional groups within the Liebherr organization.
  • Supports capturing warehouse and manufacturing demands using both internal and external sources for packing material and services for delivery.
  • Provides input for fiscal planning, capital projects and cost reductions.
  • Reviews product design for packaging requirements.
  • Determines best packaging methods (tote, rack, crate, etc.) for in-bound material flow consisting of 12,000+ active parts
  • Determines packaging fleet sizes and appropriate dunnage for safe and efficient transport and handling of material.
  • Develops returnable packaging needs within supply chain to prevent packaging shortages and overages.
  • Ensures that all packaging procedures and processes are followed in all areas of responsibility in accordance with established ISO guidelines, including documentation and updates.
  • Collects knowledge on state-of-the art opportunities in packaging logistics and actively initiates and leads continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develops and reviews project charters, proposals and plans based on project goal from senior management to determine time frame, project budget, and procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of projects.
  • Level II:
  • All duties of Packaging Engineer Level I plus:
  • Applies acquired job skills, policies, procedures and work instructions to complete tasks.
  • Requires instructions on a few assignments.
  • Identifies areas for warehouse and packaging improvements, researches, and develops solutions to improve process efficiency.
  • Selects, specifies, and installs equipment that is statistically capable, reliable, and maintainable as well as safe and ergonomically sound
  • Dispositions issues with non-conforming product.
  • Attends and provides packaging feedback at design reviews.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to drive quality and process improvements.
  • Collect, analyze data, develop metrics and reports using basic statistical methods
  • Provides technical direction, leadership and support for the factory in lean manufacturing, tooling, manufacturing processes, project management, and training.
  • Designs and develops area specific KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) within the warehouse & logistics group.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements measures to improve shipping methods, equipment performance, packaging and quality of product.
  • Level III:
  • All duties of Packaging Engineer Level II plus:
  • Utilizes substantial understanding of the job and applies knowledge and skills to complete a wide range of tasks.
  • Requires minimal supervision.
  • Works on assignments that are moderately difficult and require judgement in resolving issues or in making recommendations.
  • Skilled in planning, managing, directing resources and managing projects.
  • Has the ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
  • Confers with Engineers to investigate equipment failures and difficulties to analyze and provide technical recommendations and design changes.
  • Independently collaborates with multiple departments to manage medium to large scale projects.
  • Researches and analyzes Field and Customer proposals, specifications, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Attends and provides packaging approval at design reviews.
  • Senior:
  • All duties of Packaging Engineer Level III plus:
  • Requires little to no supervision.
  • Effectively communicates and manages projects with Suppliers, Purchasing and Engineering.
  • Trains, mentors, and develops peers and other personnel on processes and procedures, resolves failures and system malfunctions, and provides technical guidance.
  • Reviews and approves processes, corrective actions, and packaging designs for manufacturability.
  • Leads the investigation of failures and difficulties to provide technical recommendations for design changes.
  • Provides feedback on customer problems and needs. Works to develop corrective and preventative actions for customer's issues relating to manufacturing.
Competencies
  • Level I:
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or Logistics Management (B.A. or B.S.) or AS in engineering related discipline with two years of packaging and/or logistics experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of packaging materials and processes.
  • Working knowledge of costing for all modes of transportation; less than truckload (LTL), truckload, air, small package, domestic and international.
  • Knowledge of fundamental engineering and project management concepts and practices.
  • Knowledge of ERP LN system as it relates to mining truck Bill of Materials (BOM) structure and inventory control.
  • Excellent communication (oral & written) skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as engineering specifications, drawings, blue prints, procedures, and manuals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Products including: Outlook,
  • Project, Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Knowledge of basic heavy equipment manufacturing processes, equipment, and work area requirements
  • Knowledge of manpower and equipment utilization calculations and planning
  • Judgment: Displays willingness to make decisions; Exhibits sound and accurate judgment;
  • Supports and explains reasoning for decisions; Includes appropriate people in decisionmaking process; Makes timely decisions.

  • Level II:
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or Logistics Management (B.A. or B.S.) with two years of applicable engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • All skills of Packaging Engineer Level I plus:
  • Experience in MRP, bills of materials related to production and inventory management.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, engineering specifications and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and other tolerance methods.
  • Responsible for projects with small to medium scope.
  • Lean Principles
  • 3D Design software basic knowledge
  • Level III:
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or Logistics Management (B.A. or B.S.) with four years of applicable engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • All skills of Packaging Engineer Level II plus:
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, managing, and directing resources and managing projects.
  • Ability to lead groups of engineers, warehouse personnel and warehouse supervision toward project goals.
  • Ability to work independently toward the completion of assigned projects and effectively present to a group.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, engineering specifications and technical documentation.
  • Responsible for large scale projects.
  • Advance Lean Principles
  • Senior:
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or Logistics Management (B.A. or B.S.) with six years of applicable engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • All skills of Packaging Engineer Level III plus:
  • Works on assignments that require considerable judgment and initiative.
