What are some common challenges faced by Contract Packaging Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Contract Packaging Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to diverse client requirements, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring cost-effective packaging solutions while maintaining quality and compliance. To address these, engineers need strong project management skills, effective communication with both clients and internal teams, and a solid understanding of regulatory standards. Proactively staying updated on packaging technologies and regularly collaborating with cross-functional teams can also help streamline processes and ensure successful project delivery.

What does a Contract Packaging Engineer do?

A Contract Packaging Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and managing packaging solutions for products, often working for third-party companies that handle packaging for clients. They ensure that packaging meets safety, regulatory, and branding requirements while optimizing for cost and efficiency. Their role may involve selecting appropriate materials, testing package durability, and coordinating with manufacturers and logistics teams. These engineers also help streamline the packing process to improve productivity and reduce waste, making them essential for companies looking to outsource their packaging needs.

What is the difference between Contract Packaging Engineer vs Packaging Technician?

AspectContract Packaging EngineerPackaging Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, packaging, or related field; certifications like PMP or Six Sigma beneficialHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign, plan, and oversee packaging projects; collaborate with manufacturing and quality teamsOperate packaging machinery; perform packaging tasks on production lines
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, consumer goods, and pharmaceutical industries for project managementCommonly found in production facilities handling daily packaging operations

The Contract Packaging Engineer focuses on designing and managing packaging projects, requiring engineering knowledge and project management skills. In contrast, the Packaging Technician handles the hands-on operation of packaging equipment, ensuring daily production runs smoothly. Both roles are essential in the packaging process but differ in scope, responsibilities, and required qualifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Packaging Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Packaging Engineer, you need a strong background in packaging design, materials science, and manufacturing processes, often supported by a degree in engineering or packaging science. Familiarity with CAD software, packaging testing equipment, and regulatory compliance tools is typically required. Strong project management, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clients and cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure innovative, cost-effective packaging solutions that meet client specifications and industry standards.

Job description

Everforth ECS is seeking a Senior Build/Packaging Engineer to work in the National Capital Region covering the Pentagon, Falls Church, and Fairfax. Please Note: This position is contingent upon contract award.
The War Data Platform (WDP) is a key initiative within the U.S. Department of War's (DoW) AI-First strategy introduced in early 2026. The WDP focuses on operational warfighting data and aims to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) on the battlefield. The WDP extends to Unclassified, Secret, and Top Secret environments, and supports collaboration between Combatant Commands, Joint Staff directorates, Senior Executive Service leaders, and operational analysts.
This role develops, governs, and advances reproducible build and packaging standards that support the deployment of production-ready AI and machine-learning model artifacts across all WDP classification enclaves, ensuring deployment reliability, supply-chain integrity, and enclave-parity packaging consistency across Unclassified, Secret, and Top Secret environments.
โ€ข Develops, governs, and advances reproducible build and packaging standards that support the deployment of production-ready AI and machine-learning model artifacts across Unclassified, Secret, and Top Secret environments.
โ€ข Establishes enterprise conventions for artifact structure, dependency management, version control, integrity verification, and configuration reproducibility, enabling predictable model promotion through all War Data Platform (WDP) Core Integration-controlled enclaves.
โ€ข Implements automated build workflows integrated with model-scanning pipelines, incorporating security vulnerability detection, integration bottleneck identification, and compliance with model development best practices outlined in test and evaluation gates.
โ€ข Constructs hardened build stages using container orchestration frameworks, artifact registries, cryptographic signing tools, software bill-of-materials generators, and controlled environment build runners.
โ€ข Develops reusable packaging templates that align artifact production with War Data Platform (WDP) Core Integration model serving runtimes, deployment orchestration patterns, and cross-domain transfer requirements.
โ€ข Coordinates with cybersecurity teams to embed security controls and verification checkpoints consistent with NIST control baselines, Zero Trust principles, and enclave-specific constraints.
โ€ข Collaborates with pipeline engineering, backend API engineering, platform operations, and external model-provider integration teams to synchronize artifact packaging with model endpoint configuration workflows, Model Zoo ingestion processes, and mission assurance validation.
โ€ข Produces documentation, packaging specifications, build runbooks, and enclave-specific deployment compatibility matrices supporting repeatable artifact promotion.
โ€ข Strengthens War Data Platform (WDP) Core Integration program value by increasing deployment reliability, reducing variance across enclaves, and supporting mission users with consistently packaged model capabilities.
โ€ข Performs other duties as assigned.
โ€ข Current Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
โ€ข CompTIA A+ certification.
โ€ข Minimum 10 years of experience designing, implementing, and governing enterprise build and artifact packaging frameworks within classified or federal multi-enclave environments.
โ€ข Demonstrated hands-on expertise constructing hardened build pipelines using container orchestration frameworks, artifact registries, cryptographic signing tools, and software bill-of-materials generators, with a proven ability to enforce reproducibility and configuration consistency across Unclassified, SIPR, and JWICS enclaves.
โ€ข Proven experience integrating automated build workflows with security-scanning pipelines-including vulnerability detection, SBOM generation, and compliance gate enforcement-aligned with DevSecOps factory standards and Zero Trust principles.
โ€ข Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, with a proven ability to weigh the relative costs and benefits of potential actions and identify the most appropriate solution.
โ€ข Highly developed interpersonal and oral/written communication skills, with the ability to effectively and professionally interact with a diverse set of stakeholders (from peers to end-users to executive management).
