Job Description

Utilizes CADD software to create construction grade detailed design drawings related to electro-mechanical systems of electrical substations. A Designer (II) should have a minimum of 3 years of experience in the industry, and should be comfortable functioning independently, as well as in a team environment. On a daily basis, a designer (II) will spend the majority of the day developing construction plans and details, according to project and customer specifications, national and local design codes and standards. A Designer (II) is sometimes asked to travel to jobsites to collect data necessary to complete their design drawing packages, or to assist in the preparation of a bid package.

Applicants should be highly organized and detail oriented. Applicants must be well versed in document control, scheduling, time management. Applicants must feel comfortable directing the work of drafters.

Qualifications

Education
Minimum of a 2 year degree in design, engineering, or engineering technology (or related field) or a high school diploma and 4 years of relevant work experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Expertise in drafting techniques including orthographic projections.
Expertise in the use of AutoCAD and / or MicroStation
A working knowledge of substation phase spacing and electrical clearance requirements for live conductors, switch components and bus supports.
3D Drafting experience is preferred.
Ability to develop a complete set of construction drawings (Layouts, Elevations, Details, Grounding Plan and Details, Trench and Conduit Plan and Details) based on project / client specifications, a single-line diagram, and engineering studies provided by the project engineer, (i.e. Grounding Analysis, Conduit Fill, Cable Ampacity, etc.) for projects up to and including 230kV.
Ability to interact with other departments to obtain information needed to complete project.
Ability to create job specific electro-mechanical details and apply standard drawing details appropriately.
A basic working knowledge of substation structures and equipment including connectors, insulators, switches, and all types of conductors and how they interconnect.
Ability to produce a complete substation Bill of Material with some assistance.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously (i.e. Time management)
Ability to direct the work of Drafters in the completion of their projects.
Ability to produce accurate site plans, station location, and profile drawings from survey information, that will be used to correctly locate substation components.
A basic working knowledge of substation construction and/or commissioning techniques and industry standards.
Familiarity with transmission line tower hardware selection, up to 230kV.
Travel to construction sites for job assessment and data gathering as needed, and return with organized field notes and necessary data to complete design work.
Ability to develop control enclosure layout, cable tray, and conduit drawings.
Ability and willingness to provide input for continuous process improvement.
A basic working knowledge of the NEC, NESC, Design Guide for Rural Substations, Vendor Materials (Switches, Insulators, Connectors, etc.), and other technical materials.
Understanding of the design input requirements and be able to accurately determine if sufficient information is available to complete assigned tasks.
Ability to accurately estimate the number of hours and duration required to complete assigned tasks.
Familiarity with MV and HV power cable duct bank construction details including conduit spacing, manhole arrangements, concrete encasement, etc.
Ability to identify scope creep in design work, and quantify it properly to the project engineer.
