What is PA shadowing?

PA shadowing is the process of observing a practicing Physician Assistant (PA) as they perform their daily duties in a clinical setting. This experience helps prospective PA students gain insight into the PA profession, learn about patient care, and understand the responsibilities and challenges of the role. Shadowing is often required or highly recommended for applicants to PA programs as it demonstrates commitment and provides valuable exposure to the healthcare field.

What can I expect during a typical day of PA shadowing, and how should I interact with patients and the healthcare team?

During a typical day of PA shadowing, you'll observe patient assessments, procedures, and team discussions under the supervision of a Physician Assistant (PA). Your main role is to quietly observe, take notes, and ask questions when appropriate—always respecting patient privacy and confidentiality. Expect to interact with a variety of healthcare professionals, but remember that patient interaction is usually limited unless invited by the PA. Demonstrating professionalism, punctuality, and a willingness to learn are key to making a positive impression and maximizing your experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Physician Assistant (PA) shadow, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Physician Assistant (PA) shadow, you should have a keen interest in healthcare, a basic understanding of medical terminology, and ideally be a pre-PA student or aspiring healthcare professional. Familiarity with HIPAA privacy rules and clinical observation protocols is important, though formal certifications are not always required. Strong soft skills like active listening, professionalism, and respectful communication help you learn effectively and make a positive impression. These skills are essential for gaining valuable insight into the PA role, building connections, and preparing for a future PA career.

Job description

Director of Provider Success & Clinical Operations
About Annie Aesthetic
Annie Aesthetic is one of the fastest-growing private equity-backed platforms in medical aesthetics and wellness. We acquire outstanding practices and accelerate their growth through proven operating systems, purpose-built technology, and a values-driven, performance-oriented culture. At the center of our model is a people-first partnership approach designed to help exceptional teams deliver extraordinary patient experiences.
We are hiring a Director of Provider Success & Clinical Operations to support and elevate providers across the Annie Aesthetic platform. This role will be responsible for helping providers ramp successfully, grow their clinical and consultative capabilities, improve performance against key KPIs, and feel connected to a broader Annie provider community.
This role is built for an operations leader with a clinical background who is energized by coaching, hungry to own outcomes, and ready to build scalable provider development systems as we grow. This role reports directly to the COO.
What You'll Own
Provider Coaching & Development
  • Review provider-level data and KPIs to identify coaching and training opportunities. Translate data into clear, actionable development plans.
  • Build personalized development plans based on experience level, performance data, and observed opportunities
  • Coach providers across all Annie Aesthetic clinic locations

Training Strategy & Coordination
  • Design and manage a scalable provider education and training process across the platform
  • Partner with AST and clinic teams to ensure trainings support clinical excellence, practical application, and clinic performance through ongoing reinforcement, coaching, and measurement
  • Ensure trainings are practical, tied to business goals, and followed by reinforcement, coaching, and measurement

Provider Community & Best-Practice Sharing
  • Build a connected Annie provider community across locations, brands, and geographies, creating forums for providers to share best practices, case studies, and lessons learned
  • Identify high-performing providers and amplify their strengths across the organization, fostering a culture of continuous learning, clinical excellence, and shared success
  • Support provider engagement, retention, and career development by building a strong provider community that encourages collaboration, shared learning, and connection across AST clinics - so providers feel invested in and part of something larger than their individual clinic

New Provider Ramping & Recruiting
  • Build and own a structured new provider ramping pathway, including shadowing, mentorship, trainings, and ramp milestones
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition on provider recruiting and candidate evaluations

Ideal Profile
We are looking for a driven, humble, and highly capable operator with a clinical background. The strongest candidates will bring:
  • 4+ years as a medical aesthetics provider, including hands-on injecting experience (RN, NP, or PA preferred)
  • 4+ years in a clinical operations role with demonstrated people leadership and project execution - ideally spanning provider training, coaching, onboarding, or clinical education
  • Strong understanding of injectables, lasers, skin health, treatment planning, consultation dynamics, and client experience
  • Comfort using performance data to diagnose opportunities and build practical, personalized development plans
  • The ability to give direct, kind, actionable feedback across all provider skill levels
  • Excellent project management skills - able to coordinate trainings across many clinics, vendors, and stakeholders
  • A builder mindset, with the ability to create structure, community, and shared standards where they do not yet exist
  • Comfortable traveling regularly to Annie clinic locations for coaching, trainings, and relationship-building; travel is expected roughly 50% of the time
