What is PSA engineering?

PSA engineering refers to the design, implementation, and maintenance of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) systems, which are used to separate and purify gases. PSA engineers work with technologies that exploit the property of certain materials to adsorb gases under pressure and release them at lower pressures. These systems are commonly used in industrial processes, such as producing high-purity oxygen, nitrogen, or hydrogen. PSA engineers are involved in system design, troubleshooting, and optimization to ensure efficient gas separation and cost-effective operation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PSA engineer?

To thrive as a PSA (Professional Services Automation) Engineer, you need a solid background in software engineering, systems integration, and experience with PSA platforms, often supported by a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with PSA tools like Salesforce, NetSuite OpenAir, or Mavenlink, along with certifications in these systems, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you address client needs and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering tailored automation solutions that optimize business processes and drive client satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by PSA engineers when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

PSA Engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges such as balancing competing deadlines, ensuring consistent communication among multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining high-quality standards across deliverables. Effective time management and prioritization are crucial, as is the ability to adapt quickly to shifting client requirements or technical issues. Collaboration tools and regular coordination meetings are commonly used to keep projects on track and foster teamwork.

What is the difference between Psa Engineering vs Piping Design Engineer?

AspectPsa EngineeringPiping Design Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in process safety or plant designEngineering degree, certifications in piping design or CAD software
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, process facilities, safety-focused settingsDesign offices, construction sites, industrial plants
Industry UsageOil & gas, chemical, petrochemical industriesOil & gas, chemical, power plants

Both Psa Engineering and Piping Design Engineers work within the industrial sector, often in oil & gas or chemical industries. Psa Engineering focuses on process safety and plant design, while Piping Design Engineers specialize in creating detailed piping layouts. They share similar credentials and work environments, but their roles emphasize different aspects of plant development and safety.

Job description

The Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) Engineer III supports Holtec's advanced reactor development by leading probabilistic safety analysis (PSA) efforts for the SMR-300 program. This role is part of a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for risk-informed design, safety analysis, and licensing of next-generation nuclear technology. The position requires deep technical expertise in PSA and thermal-hydraulic modeling, along with the ability to translate complex risk insights into actionable design improvements within a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.
Location: Camden, NJ Waterfront Campus with other locations available!
  • This position may be based at one of several Holtec locations across the United States. Relocation assistance available!

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead development of PSA models and supporting thermal-hydraulic analyses for risk-informed design and licensing
  • Develop Level 1 and Level 2 PRA models for internal and external events across full power and shutdown conditions
  • Perform thermal-hydraulic modeling (RELAP5-3D, MELCOR) to simulate core and containment response in severe accident scenarios
  • Develop and quantify event trees and fault trees to evaluate key risk metrics such as core damage frequency (CDF) and large release frequency (LRF)
  • Maintain and update PSA models as SMR-300 design evolves
  • Apply PSA results to support risk-informed programs (e.g., RTNSS, D-RAP, 10 CFR 50.69 categorization)
  • Partner with design engineers to integrate PSA insights into system and plant design decisions
  • Mentor junior engineers on PSA methodologies, tools, and best practices
  • Ensure technical accuracy, quality, and consistency across all PSA deliverables
  • Support regulatory interactions and documentation related to safety analysis and licensing

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • 6-10 years of experience in PSA and/or thermal-hydraulic safety analysis within the nuclear industry
  • Strong understanding of light water reactor (LWR) thermal-hydraulic behavior
  • Expertise with PSA and modeling tools (e.g., CAFTA, SAPHIRE, RiskSpectrum, RELAP5-3D, MELCOR)
  • Experience with PSA specialty areas such as external hazards (fire, flood, seismic) or low power/shutdown analysis preferred
  • Knowledge of PSA regulatory frameworks and ASME/ANS PRA standards
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in a complex engineering environment
  • Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810
