Role Description

The Golf Course Superintendent is the senior agronomic leader responsible for the overall condition, presentation, and long-term health of the entire golf course, practice facilities, and associated grounds, as well as the leadership and development of the golf maintenance team. This leader sets the agronomic vision and daily execution standard for the department - planning, organizing, and directing all course maintenance operations to deliver consistent, exemplary playing conditions that reflect Brasada Ranch's standing as a premier resort and residential community. As the resort continues to grow, the Superintendent is expected not only to maintain, but to actively elevate course conditions, championing continuous improvement, sound environmental stewardship, and thoughtful capital and renovation planning. The Superintendent oversees the equipment maintenance and repair operation, procures supplies and materials within budgetary limits, maintains records of all maintenance activities and costs, prepares and presents the annual golf course maintenance and capital budgets, and leads all recruiting and talent acquisition for the department.

General Responsibilities

Agronomic Leadership & Playing Conditions

  • Establish and execute a comprehensive agronomic plan (fertility, cultural practices, aerification, topdressing, plant protectant, and water management programs) that delivers consistent, championship-level playing conditions across greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
  • Set and uphold clearly defined daily and seasonal course setup and conditioning standards, adjusting proactively for weather, play volume, seasonality, and the demands of a high desert climate.
  • Continuously assess turf health, soil conditions, and course presentation, using data and best practices to both elevate quality and protect the long-term health of the property.
  • Lead planning and execution of course improvement, renovation, and grow-in projects as the resort expands, partnering with ownership and leadership on scope, timeline, and capital needs.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and develop a high-performing maintenance team, including any assistant superintendent(s), equipment technician(s), spray technician(s), and seasonal crew.
  • Provide clear direction, performance feedback, and ongoing coaching, building bench strength and a culture of accountability, safety, and pride in the work.
  • Foster effective employee relations and a positive, collaborative team environment aligned with Brasada's culture and values.

Operations, Equipment & Facilities

  • Direct the operation, preventive maintenance, and repair of all golf course equipment and the maintenance shop, ensuring reliability, safety, and cost efficiency.
  • Procure and manage inventory of machinery, chemicals, parts, fertilizers, materials, and supplies, and supervise their proper, compliant, and safe use.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, chemical and fertilizer applications, water usage, equipment hours, and associated costs.

Water & Environmental Stewardship

  • Manage irrigation and pump station operations to optimize turf health and playability while responsibly conserving water in a high desert environment.
  • Ensure full compliance with all federal, state (Oregon ODA/DEQ), and local environmental, chemical handling, storage, and application regulations.
  • Champion sustainable and environmentally responsible maintenance practices consistent with the resort's values and any applicable certification or stewardship programs.

Budget & Administrative Management

  • Prepare, present, and manage the annual golf course maintenance operating budget and capital budget, and maintain appropriate administrative controls over budget, labor, and inventory.
  • Monitor expenditures against budget throughout the year, forecasting and adjusting to hit financial targets without compromising conditions.

Member, Guest & Cross-Departmental Relations

  • Communicate regularly and proactively with the Golf Professional/Pro Shop and resort leadership regarding course conditions, closures, cultural practices, and special projects, and coordinate maintenance activities around play and events.
  • Author a monthly course-conditions communication (newsletter) for the membership, keeping members informed and engaged on conditions, projects, and agronomic initiatives.
  • Participate in club and resort events to build strong relationships with members and guests, and develop effective public and community relations.
  • Partner cooperatively with all resort departments to support a seamless guest and member experience.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Skills/Traits

  • Two- or four-year degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant/Soil Science, or a closely related field (four-year degree preferred); or equivalent extensive training and experience in turfgrass and golf course management.
  • GCSAA Class A membership required or attainable; Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) designation strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5โ€“7 years of progressive golf course maintenance experience, including 3+ years as a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent at a comparable resort, private, or championship-caliber facility.
  • Demonstrated agronomic expertise managing cool-season turf in a high desert / arid, high-elevation climate, including proven success delivering and elevating premium playing conditions.
  • Advanced water and irrigation management expertise, including hands-on knowledge of Toro irrigation systems and Lynx central control software, pump station operation, and moisture-sensing/soil-monitoring technology.
  • Proficiency with current agronomic technology, including GPS/GIS spray systems, handheld moisture meters, on-site weather stations, and data-driven agronomic planning tools.
  • Strong project management capability, with experience leading course renovation, construction, or grow-in projects and managing outside contractors a significant plus.
  • Proven budget planning, forecasting, and cost-control experience for both operating and capital budgets.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-building ability, with a track record of recruiting, developing, and retaining maintenance staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cooperatively with staff, leadership, members, guests, and other resort departments.
  • Working knowledge of a participating-level understanding of the game of golf and its impact on course setup and conditioning.
  • Proficiency with computers and standard business software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) and agronomic record-keeping/reporting systems.
  • Proficient with all equipment used in golf course maintenance and a strong working knowledge of shop and equipment management.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety practices and OSHA requirements, and commitment to a safe work environment.
  • Current Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within [90 days] of hire).
  • UST (Underground Storage Tank) certification.
  • Valid Oregon driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and duties as assigned.
