What is an overnight RN?

Overnight Registered Nurses (RNs) are licensed nursing professionals who work night shifts in healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, or clinics. Their responsibilities include monitoring patient health, administering medications, responding to emergencies, and collaborating with other staff to provide continuous care during overnight hours. Working overnight requires strong attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to work independently. These nurses play a critical role in ensuring patient safety and care throughout the night when staffing is often reduced.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight RN?

To thrive as an Overnight RN, you need a solid background in clinical nursing, acute care skills, and an active RN license, often accompanied by experience in night shift or critical care environments. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), medication administration systems, and bedside monitoring technology is essential. Strong organization, resilience, and effective communication are vital soft skills for handling high-pressure situations and working with patients and limited overnight staff. These competencies ensure safe, high-quality patient care and efficient operations during overnight hours when resources and support may be reduced.

What unique challenges do overnight RNs face compared to day-shift nurses?

Overnight RNs often encounter unique challenges such as managing fatigue and adapting to disrupted sleep patterns, which can impact alertness and decision-making. They typically work with reduced staffing levels and fewer support resources, requiring a higher degree of autonomy and strong critical thinking skills. Additionally, overnight RNs may perform more independent assessments and handle emergencies until daytime teams arrive, making adaptability and effective communication with both patients and incoming staff essential.

Registered Nurse (RN) - Skilled Nursing and Subacute Rehabilitation

Elderwood at Cheektowaga | Cheektowaga, NY
Full-time, part-time, and per diem opportunities
Day, evening, and overnight shifts available

Med-Surg-Style Clinical Variety. Greater Continuity of Care.

Elderwood at Cheektowaga is seeking Registered Nurses to join our skilled nursing and rehabilitation team. This is more than a traditional long-term-care nursing position. Our RNs care for long-term residents and short-stay rehabilitation patients transitioning from hospital to home, creating an environment with meaningful clinical variety, interdisciplinary collaboration, and opportunities to strengthen your assessment and technical skills.

You will provide direct nursing care, coordinate with providers and rehabilitation professionals, guide CNAs, respond to changes in condition, and develop relationships with residents and families that often extend beyond a brief hospital encounter.

Whether you are an experienced post-acute nurse, coming from a hospital or another clinical setting, or looking to build your skilled nursing experience, Elderwood at Cheektowaga offers an opportunity to remain clinically engaged while making a visible difference in recovery, comfort, safety, and quality of life.

RN Pay and Scheduling

Potential earnings of up to $48.00 per hour, based on experience and including applicable shift differentials.

Maximize Your Earnings
    • Experience credit reflected in your individual rate

    • Shift differentials for qualifying evening, overnight, and weekend hours

    • Additional 10% premium-pay opportunity for eligible employees who opt out of certain elective benefits

    • Employee referral bonus opportunities of up to $2,000

    • Full-time, part-time, and per diem scheduling options

    • Day, evening, and overnight shifts available

Ask our recruitment team to explain the available compensation programs and how your experience, shift, employment status, and benefit elections may affect your individual rate.

More Than Traditional Long-Term Care

Elderwood at Cheektowaga is a 172-bed skilled nursing community providing long-term care, memory care, and comprehensive subacute rehabilitation.

Our clinical teams care for individuals recovering from illness, injury, surgery, orthopedic procedures, and cardiac conditions. Facility capabilities include:

    • IV therapy

    • PICC-line management

    • Wound-vac therapy

    • Complex wound care

    • Ostomy care

    • Enteral feeding

    • Dialysis coordination

Depending on your assignment, resident needs, physician orders, and demonstrated competencies, you may care for patients receiving these treatments while managing medications, completing assessments, monitoring clinical progress, coordinating services, and preparing patients for a safe transition to their next level of care.

For RNs who enjoy med-surg-style clinical variety but also value continuity, teamwork, and meaningful patient relationships, this is an engaging post-acute nursing environment.

Practice With Support Around You

Registered Nurses at Elderwood have meaningful clinical responsibility - but they are not expected to practice without support. You will work with onsite nursing leaders, including Unit Managers, RN Supervisors, the Assistant Director of Nursing, and the Director of Nursing. You will also collaborate with providers, rehabilitation professionals, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.

Facility clinical leadership receives additional support from Elderwood Administrative Services, including organization-wide direction from the Chief Nursing Officer and an assigned Regional Nurse Consultant. This broader structure supports clinical standards, quality, regulatory readiness, leadership development, and problem-solving throughout the facility-giving bedside nurses the benefit of working within an established clinical organization.

Build the Next Stage of Your Nursing Career

A staff RN position at Elderwood can be both meaningful clinical practice today and a foundation for future growth. Registered Nurses may have opportunities to develop as preceptors, RN Supervisors, Unit Managers, Nurse Educators, ADONs, DONs, and other clinical leaders. Tuition-reimbursement and professional-development programs are available to eligible employees pursuing continued education and career advancement.

RNs who demonstrate strong performance, leadership potential, and an interest in future Director of Nursing opportunities may also be considered for advanced development experiences, including Widener University's Director of Nursing Leadership Academy.

Whether you want to deepen your bedside practice or begin preparing for leadership, Elderwood offers multiple ways to continue developing your nursing career.

Build Your Nursing Career Close to Home

Elderwood at Cheektowaga offers a convenient nursing opportunity for RNs throughout Cheektowaga, West Seneca, Depew, Lancaster, Sloan, South Buffalo, and Buffalo's eastern neighborhoods.

Located near I-90 and accessible from Route 33 and other major local corridors, the facility may also be within a practical commute of Lackawanna, Williamsville, Amherst, Clarence, Elma, Alden, Orchard Park, and surrounding Erie County communities.

Bring Your Clinical Skills to Elderwood
