What does an Overnight RF IC Design Engineer do?

An Overnight RF IC Design Engineer specializes in designing and testing radio frequency integrated circuits (RF ICs) during overnight shifts. These engineers work on developing and optimizing components used in wireless communication devices, such as amplifiers, mixers, and oscillators. Their role involves circuit simulation, layout design, prototype testing, and troubleshooting to ensure performance and reliability. Working overnight may be necessary to support round-the-clock product development or manufacturing processes, especially in global or fast-paced industries.

What are some common challenges faced by Overnight RF IC Design Engineers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Overnight RF IC Design Engineers often navigate challenges such as tight project deadlines, troubleshooting complex analog and RF circuit issues, and ensuring seamless communication with global teams working across different time zones. Managing these challenges effectively involves strong organizational skills, proactive documentation, and regular updates with daytime engineering teams to maintain project continuity. Additionally, leveraging simulation tools and rigorous testing protocols can help identify and resolve potential design issues before they escalate, ensuring high-quality outcomes even when working independently during overnight shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight RF IC Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight RF IC Design Engineer, you need a deep understanding of RF circuit design, semiconductor physics, and analog/digital integration, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Cadence, ADS, and SPICE simulators, along with familiarity with layout and verification processes, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across teams and troubleshoot complex issues efficiently. These skills ensure the successful design and implementation of high-performance RF integrated circuits that meet stringent specifications and project timelines.

Job description

Job Description
Change the world. Love your job.
Texas Instruments (TI) is out front and ready for the next big challenge. Our innovations are at the core of nearly every electronics product in use today. And it doesn't stop there. We're developing breakthrough technology to power the world's future innovations as well. TI is committed to building a better future - from the responsible manufacturing of our semiconductors, to caring for our employees, to giving back inside our communities. Put your talent to work with us.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Analog and Mixed Signal Designer to join the development of the next-generation USB 2.0 and eUSB2 solutions for Enterprise AI and IoT applications. You will contributing to analog PHY design from concept through production, including circuit architecture, schematic implementation, and layout supervision. You will contribute to mentoring our growing analog design team while collaborating with cross-functional groups on silicon validation and qualification. In addition to analog design, responsibilities also include contributing to project planning/tracking, supporting customer engagement, and ensuring designs meet TI's reliability standards using advanced CMOS process technologies. This role offers the opportunity to drive innovation in USB interface technologies while contributing to industry-leading products in a collaborative environment focused on technical excellence and professional growth.
In this role, responsibilities may include:
  • Technical design leadership for an analog IC design from product definition to release to manufacturing
  • Support architecture definition including feasibility studies for design trade-offs.
  • Analog circuit design to meet functional and performance requirements while also meeting quality/reliability requirements.
  • Top-level and block-level analog design verification using latest methodologies in testbench development, automation and data analysis.
  • Technical mentor for early-career analog designers.
  • Provide design support for application engineers and customer design-ins.
  • Collaborate with multi-discipline new product development teams.

Qualifications
Minimum requirements:
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 5 years of experience in analog design for wireline serial communication protocols (USB, PCIe, DisplayPort, Ethernet, etc.)
  • Working experience with various analog building blocks, such as current mirrors, operational amplifiers, sense amplifiers, charge pumps, oscillators, and LDOs
  • Proficient in design and simulation tools (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso, SPICE, extraction tools)
  • Experience with layout principles, matching techniques, parasitic extraction, and post-layout verification
  • Collaborate with Design Verification team to ensure bug-free silicon

Preferred qualifications:
  • Prior experience in USB 2.0 or eUSB2 PHY development
  • Experience with advanced CMOS process technologies.
  • Knowledge of reliability considerations: ESD, latch-up, electromigration, stress effects
  • Working knowledge of analog design verification
  • Experience in silicon bring-up, debug, and characterization
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong time management skills that enable on-time project delivery
