Manager, Consumer Strategy & Growth

The Atlantic

Washington, DC โ€ข On-site, Remote

$77K - $85K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 18 days ago

Job description

The Atlantic is seeking a detail-oriented, strategic, and hands-on Manager, Consumer Marketing to join the Consumer Strategy and Growth team.

In this role, you will help drive subscriber acquisition by executing email marketing campaigns and contributing to email strategy, managing A/B testing planning and execution, and creating automations that convert non-subscribers into subscribers.

This role sits on the Consumer Strategy and Growth team and plays an important part in supporting the growth of The Atlantic and the longevity of independent, fact-checked journalism.

The ideal candidate is a strong operator and curious problem solver who combines attention to detail with analytical rigor, creative thinking, and a collaborative working style.

This role reports to the Associate Director focused on consumer marketing and is based in Washington, D.C. or remote.

Responsibilities

  • Execute acquisition email campaigns and automations end to end in Sailthru, including template setup, audience selection, QA, scheduling, and deployment.

  • Expand and manage the A/B testing strategy across acquisition campaigns and automations, from hypothesis development through analysis and recommendation.

  • Deliver data-backed recommendations to improve email conversion, personalization, segmentation, and data collection efforts.

  • Own non-subscriber email automations and build new trigger- or engagement-based journeys that drive subscription purchases.

  • Manage audience segmentation to improve engagement, opt-out, and conversion rates while supporting healthy list practices.

  • Monitor campaign, automation, and audience performance in Looker and identify opportunities or issues quickly enough to act on them.

  • Partner closely with teams across CSG, as well as Product, Editorial and Data Engineering

  • Maintain a high bar for execution, documentation, and testing rigor so campaigns ship cleanly and learnings compound over time.

Qualifications

  • Passion for the future of high-quality, independent journalism.

  • 2+ years of experience in email, lifecycle, or growth marketing; experience in media, publishing, or subscription businesses is a plus.

  • Experience designing, running, and analyzing A/B tests and applying what you learn to future campaigns and testing plans.

  • Hands-on experience with an ESP or marketing automation platform; familiarity with Sailthru is a plus.

  • Experience with a data visualization or analytics platform, with Looker strongly preferred.

  • Ability to distill campaign performance into clear findings and actionable recommendations for stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of email marketing fundamentals, including messaging, list management, deliverability, and compliance best practices.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS and experience building or editing email templates in HTML.

  • Familiarity with a CDP such as Lytics and an understanding of how customer data supports segmentation and triggered journeys.

  • Strong technical fluency and comfort working across platforms, systems, and tools that support testing, QA, reporting, and campaign execution.

  • Resourceful and self-directed, with the ability to troubleshoot issues, learn new systems quickly, and figure things out independently.

  • Openness to using new technologies and workflows, including AI tools such as Claude, to improve research, analysis, and execution efficiency.

Salary minimum; $77,000; Salary maximum: $85,000

This role is based in Washington, D.C., and open to remote candidates.

This is a Guild position.
