Overnight Inventory Scanner information

What is an overnight inventory scanner?

Overnight Inventory Scanners are employees responsible for counting and recording inventory in stores or warehouses during nighttime hours. Their main duties include scanning barcodes, verifying stock levels, and ensuring inventory records are accurate without disrupting daytime operations. This role is essential for maintaining up-to-date inventory data, supporting restocking, and minimizing discrepancies. Overnight shifts are common to avoid interfering with customers and daytime staff. Attention to detail and proficiency with scanning devices are important skills for this job.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an overnight inventory scanner?

To excel as an Overnight Inventory Scanner, you need strong attention to detail, basic math skills, and the ability to work independently, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with handheld barcode scanners, inventory management software, and sometimes warehouse management systems is typically expected. Reliability, time management, and the ability to adapt to night shifts are crucial soft skills for consistent performance. These competencies ensure accurate inventory tracking, minimize errors, and support efficient operations during off-peak hours.

What are common challenges faced by overnight inventory scanners, and how can they be managed?

Overnight Inventory Scanners often face challenges such as maintaining focus during late hours, accurately scanning large volumes of items, and adapting to fast-paced work environments. Effective time management, taking scheduled breaks, and using ergonomic equipment can help manage fatigue. Team collaboration is also crucial, as scanners often coordinate with supervisors and other team members to resolve discrepancies and ensure inventory counts are accurate and timely.

Job description

Senior & Mid Level Physical Inventory Supervisor – Northern California

Competitive Pay | Field Leadership | Growth Opportunity

Ready to Be a True Inventory Supervisor?

If you've worked in professional inventory and know how to run a successful inventory—not just count one—we want to talk to you.

Valley Inventory Service (VIS) is looking for experienced Inventory Supervisors and Crew Leaders throughout Northern California.

We are especially interested in people with experience at WIS, RGIS, PICS or other professional inventory companies who are ready for greater responsibility, ownership and an opportunity to grow.

At VIS, a Supervisor isn't simply the fastest counter wearing a different title.

You are the on-site leader of the inventory.

You lead the people.
You manage the process.
You communicate with the customer.
You protect accuracy.
And you take ownership of getting the job done right.

What You'll Own

As a VIS Physical Inventory Supervisor, you will be responsible for the inventory from arrival through successful completion.

You will:

  • Lead and supervise inventory crews at customer locations
  • Review the scope and expectations of each inventory
  • Conduct crew briefings and assign counting areas
  • Set the pace and keep the crew productive
  • Monitor accuracy and inventory progress
  • Train, coach and develop Inventory Auditors and Crew Leads
  • Perform audits, verification counts and recounts
  • Identify problems early and take corrective action
  • Communicate directly and professionally with customer management
  • Troubleshoot inventory equipment and operational issues
  • Coordinate with VIS Operations when additional support is needed
  • Verify that all areas are completed before closing the inventory
  • Complete timekeeping, paperwork and required job documentation
  • Account for VIS equipment and resources

And when the team needs help, you jump in.

Our supervisors lead from the floor and aren't afraid to count, scan, audit or troubleshoot alongside their crews.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for people who already understand that successful inventories require more than counting fast.

You should be someone who can walk into a customer location, introduce yourself to management, understand the assignment, organize a crew and confidently take responsibility for the inventory.

Strong candidates will have:

  • Professional physical inventory experience
  • Previous Crew Lead, Supervisor or field-leadership experience
  • Strong people and communication skills
  • A track record of reliability and punctuality
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail
  • The ability to organize and motivate crews
  • Confidence communicating directly with customers
  • Comfort using handheld inventory technology and computers
  • The ability to make good decisions without constant supervision
  • A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Availability to travel throughout Northern California
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and occasional overnight assignments

Compensation

Starting $20.00 plus Bonus eligible based on skills and count speed.

Your starting rate will depend on your inventory experience, leadership experience and demonstrated ability to independently manage inventory assignments.

We recognize increased capability with increased opportunity.

Our goal is to develop supervisors who can progress from leading smaller assignments to independently managing larger and more complex inventories and customer relationships.
