Job description
The Systems Engineer II (3rd Shift) serves as a primary technical resource during overnight operational hours. The position supports internal and external managed-services environments by monitoring critical infrastructure, responding to alerts and incidents, performing systems and network administration, executing approved after-hours maintenance, and ensuring the stability and availability of customer services. The engineer acts as an overnight escalation point, works independently within established procedures, communicates critical events to on-call resources, and provides complete shift-turnover documentation while ensuring assigned work is completed in adherence to iT1 standards.
Requirements
- Serve as a primary overnight escalation point for infrastructure, network, cloud, backup, and platform incidents within the NOC team's scope.
- Maintain continuous monitoring coverage throughout the assigned shift and respond to critical alerts, service events, and monitoring notifications within established response targets.
- Validate alerts, assess business impact, correlate related events, complete initial triage, and resolve or escalate incidents according to documented procedures.
- Research, resolve, document, and communicate internal and client issues in a timely manner while meeting applicable SLA response, update, escalation, and resolution expectations.
- Perform proactive overnight health checks of client infrastructure, hosted services, backup jobs, replication processes, scheduled automation, and other critical operational services.
- Coordinate overnight incident response for outages and service interruptions; engage on-call engineering, leadership, vendors, or client contacts as required by the escalation matrix.
- Provide intermediate-level network troubleshooting and configuration support, including Meraki, Cisco, switching, routing, wireless, firewall connectivity, and VPN tunnels.
- Provide intermediate-level troubleshooting of Windows workstations, file servers, Windows Server platforms, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and related services.
- Provide intermediate-level Azure support, including virtual machines, storage, networking, network security groups, backup, monitoring, and identity integrations.
- Support Microsoft 365 services, including Outlook, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, and common identity or access-related issues.
- Support VMware vSphere and/or Microsoft Hyper-V environments, including virtual machine lifecycle tasks, host or cluster health, and compute, storage, or resource issues.
- Execute approved overnight maintenance windows, patching activities, infrastructure changes, and validation steps in accordance with change-management procedures.
- Participate in major incident response and root cause analysis by capturing timelines, contributing factors, corrective actions, and follow-up items.
- Create comprehensive shift-turnover notes for unresolved incidents, pending maintenance, client communications, and risks requiring day-shift follow-up.
- Ensure all overnight incidents, alerts, maintenance activities, changes, escalations, and client communications are fully documented before shift completion.
- Identify recurring overnight alerts or operational issues and recommend monitoring, documentation, automation, or process improvements.
- Use PowerShell or other approved tools to gather diagnostic information, improve repeatability, and automate appropriate routine administrative tasks.
- Maintain and develop required diagrams, documentation, procedures, and IT asset records for internal and client environments.
- Provide professional communication to internal teams and external customers during normal operations and service-impacting incidents.
JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- 3-5 years of progressive infrastructure, systems, networking, cloud, or managed-services support experience.
- Experience supporting 24x7 operations, an NOC, an MSP, or another alert-driven production environment preferred.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, networking, Azure, and at least one virtualization platform.
- Experience managing incidents from alert through triage, resolution or escalation, documentation, and operational handoff.
- Ability to work independently with limited immediate supervision and make sound operational decisions within documented authority.
- Ability to prioritize multiple concurrent incidents and recognize when immediate escalation is required.
- Ability to communicate clearly with technical teams, on-call personnel, business users, and external customers during overnight incidents.
- Ability to accurately follow technical work instructions, maintenance plans, change records, escalation procedures, and validation checklists.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Experience with LogicMonitor, NinjaOne, ConnectWise PSA, IT Glue, or similar platforms.
- Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Backup, and Azure Site Recovery.
- Experience supporting VMware vSphere, VMware Cloud Foundation, and/or Microsoft Hyper-V.
- PowerShell scripting and automation experience is beneficial
- Experience completing production maintenance during approved after-hours change windows.
- Strong troubleshooting skills during high-impact outages and the ability to maintain accurate communication under time-sensitive conditions.
