The Broadband Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and support of core systems that enable customer provisioning, billing, and operational visibility in an ISP environment. This role focuses on database systems, internal tools, and critical services such as DHCP and DNS.

What are the responsibilities of a Broadband Systems Engineer?

  • Administer and maintain database systems (performance tuning, backups, replication, data integrity)
  • Support and maintain billing platform, including integration with provisioning and payment systems
  • Develop and maintain internal web-based tools for network operations and troubleshooting
  • Automate operational tasks using scripting (data collection, system synchronization, config generation)
  • Manage Linux servers and virtual infrastructure (patching, performance, uptime)
  • Maintain monitoring systems and dashboards for service visibility and performance tracking

    Core Network Services

    • Administer central DHCP infrastructure (scope management, failover, lease tracking)
    • Maintain DNS servers (recursive resolution, performance, availability)
    • Ensure integration between DHCP/DNS, provisioning systems, and billing platforms
    • Manage IP address allocation and tracking (IPAM)

    Provisioning & Integration

    • Support customer provisioning workflows (DHCP, configuration files, service tiers)
    • Ensure accurate synchronization between network systems and billing platforms
    • Troubleshoot service activation and provisioning issues

    Automation & Data

    • Develop scripts for network and system data collection (SNMP, API, CLI)
    • Automate configuration generation and deployment processes
    • Build and maintain reporting tools for usage and performance analysis

    Monitoring & Troubleshooting

    • Implement and maintain system and service monitoring
    • Analyze logs and system data for issue resolution
    • Support operations teams with tools and technical insight

    Security & Reliability

    • Maintain system security (patching, access control, vulnerability management)
    • Ensure high availability and redundancy for critical services
    • Support disaster recovery planning and testing

    Network Services Procurement and Management

    • Research and evaluate internet circuits and connectivity services to support community broadband initiatives
    • Coordinate with vendors and service providers to support contracts and service agreements
    • Assist with review and reconciliation of vendor invoices and service billing

      What are the Role Requirements?

      • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related field is preferred.
      • A minimum of 2 years of network engineering and administration experience is required.
      • Experience with Linux system administration
      • Experience with database management (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar)
      • Scripting experience (Python, PHP, Bash)
      • Familiarity with web frameworks (Flask, PHP, or similar)
      • Strong understanding of DHCP, DNS, and IP addressing
      • Experience in ISP or service provider environments preferred
      • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
      • Ability to be organized, detail-oriented, and to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
      • Ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with others.
      • Must possess exceptional organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to balance and prioritize simultaneous projects and tasks.
      • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
      • Must present the ability to execute job duties under stressful circumstances such as last-minute deadlines or other difficult situations.
      • Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
      • Must be willing to travel to various locations via private or public air transportation and locations within driving distance via car multiple times a month, including overnight trips.
      • Regular attendance, work ethic and strong interpersonal skills are required for success in this position.

      • Participate in an on-call rotation (approximately one week at a time) to support critical systems and services
      • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
