Job Summary:
The Commercial Sales Representative will sell lumber, building materials, and maintenance products to assigned accounts, which can include builders, remodelers, individuals, other businesses, and industrial establishments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Travels throughout assigned area to call on regular and prospective customers at job sites, sales offices, or other locations to solicit orders for existing customers and/or generate new accounts for assigned store location(s).
  • Compiles lists of prospective customers for use as sales leads, based on business directories, industry ads, trade shows, websites, and requests received in the store.
  • Maintains book of business by building and maintaining customer relationships.
  • Responds to concerns and questions of prospective and existing customers by using consultative selling methods to determine needs and develop creative solutions to problems within the constraints of the store operation.
  • Assists customers with product questions and purchases.
  • Estimates product quantities for prospective jobs and develops competitive pricing bids to solicit sales. Estimates date of delivery to customer, based on knowledge of own firm's and supplier's production and delivery schedules.
  • Explains price plans, and credit terms and prepares sales orders.
  • Investigate and resolve customer problems with deliveries, product quality, or service.
  • Manages and monitors credit for all assigned customers including setting up accounts, making changes to accounts, and collecting.
  • Prepares reports of business transactions, including weekly sales call logs, mileage, and expenses.
  • Works with and through corporate, store, and commercial management and employees to facilitate sales expectations and company service standards.
  • Attends trade shows.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to operate available equipment, such as cash registers, calculators, or scanners.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints for residential and multi-family building projects preferred.
  • Basic and intermediate knowledge of building products and local building codes.
  • Must have a current driver's license and auto liability insurance.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.

Education and Experience:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Successful completion of on-the-job training; completing levels 1 and 2 of the positional training offered.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing and working on the computer or related equipment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • May need to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • The ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods.
