Reports to:

Clinic Manager, Lead Veterinary Technician, or Veterinarian.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Overnight Veterinary Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for monitoring and documenting the well-being of hospitalized patients throughout the night, ensuring they receive the highest level of care. The role requires knowledge of the radiology process and other diagnostics, as one may be asked to perform these tasks by the on-call veterinarian. This role also involves preparing for the next day’s surgeries, including sterilizing surgical instruments, organizing and setting up surgery rooms, laundry, maintaining a clean and safe environment for our animals, and communicating professionally with, and carrying out orders from DVM's when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

An Overnight Veterinary Assistant must be able to, effectively and accurately, perform the following duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Record all pertinent medical, client, and case related information in the patient record accurately, with appropriate grammar.
  • Administration of medication as directed by the Veterinarian.
  • Collection of lab samples.
  • Monitoring all hospitalized patients throughout the night (pre and post operative patients).
  • Review medical records, estimates or discharge instructions with clients if assigned.
  • Care of hospitalized patients, patient exercise, feeding, medicating as directed by the veterinarian, shaving, nail trimming, ear cleaning, medicated and regular bathing, and other assigned patient care related tasks.
  • Basic grooming such as nail trims and ear cleaning.
  • Observe patients throughout the night looking for signs of distress, illness, parasites, disease control, or any other change in patient status. Report any abnormalities or concerns to the Veterinarian or LVT.
  • Restraining cats and dogs of all sizes.
  • Understanding and collection of vital signs. Identification of any abnormalities and alerting DVM/LVT.
  • Assist with radiographs utilizing appropriate PPE and dosimeter badge.
  • Monitor patients under anesthesia.
  • Assist in all duties for clinic care and ensuring protocol is met for clinic sanitation.
  • Perform equipment maintenance as directed.
  • Prepare surgery packs.
  • Clean and autoclave syringes, needles, and other surgical instruments.
  • Unpack supply deliveries, restock, and reconcile packing slips.
  • Thoroughly clean autoclave per clinic schedule.
  • Be in position and prepared to work by the start of your scheduled shift
  • Maintain a professional appearance at all times.
  • Be aware of cleanliness of clinic grounds at all times.
  • Clean and sanitize surgery recovery kennels and treatment areas as needed between treatment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Compassion and sensitivity: Ability to be sensitive to an ill pet, as well as its concerned owner.
  • Customer service skills: Ability to provide friendly, efficient service to patients in-person, as well as on the phone.
  • Interpersonal skills: Ability to feel comfortable dealing with patients, staff, and others.
  • Technology skills: Ability to operate office technology such as computers, payment processors and printers.
  • Mental and physical stamina: Ability to stay calm when handling a nervous, defensive animal while maintaining professionalism with the client.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb - as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50lbs.
  • Endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods.
  • Organizational skills: Ability to manage office operations such as taking messages, scheduling appointments, and maintaining patient files.
  • Ability to be confident around pets
  • Able to work in potentially noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment.
