Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:  Peer Support Specialist (PSS) must have or had a serious mental illness and be living well in recovery. This position provides peer support services, which includes providing emotional support, coaching and training, empowerment and advocacy, to persons with a serious mental illness in their homes and/or community settings.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Provide support to other peers and assist them in reaching and maintaining their personal recovery goals. 

  • Promote self-determination and support peers in maintaining relationships and increasing a higher level of control and satisfaction over their lives. 

  • Promote skills for improving mental and physical wellbeing and increasing resiliency.   

  • Assist individuals with identifying and utilizing natural supports and community-based resources to reach and maintain their recovery. 

  • Collaborate with individuals to develop and implement their individualized treatment plan and coping/crisis plan     

  • When applicable, participate in interdisciplinary meetings of individuals on your caseload. 

  • Follow all safety procedures and promote safety measures among the team and peers. 

  • Timely filing of receipts and mileage into online platform. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.  

  • Physical mobility to walk, stoop, stand, sit, and climb steps. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Have or have had a serious mental illness and are living well in recovery. 

  • Be at least 18 years of age. 

  • Must have a GED or high school diploma. 

  • Ability to complete required 40-hour Peer Support Specialist training within six months of hire. 

  • Knowledge and understanding of the "recovery" model of service delivery. 

  • Good written and verbal communication skills and have basic computer skills. 

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions. 

  • Reliable Transportation. 

  • Provide proof of state minimum liability insurance coverage. 

  • Valid Class C driver’s license required, unless driving a vehicle with a capacity of 8 or more, then a Class “D” license will be required and be an insurable driver with our insurance company.
