How much do outsourced welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for outsourced welding in the United States is $29.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $34.13 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Outsourced Welding position, and why are they important?

To excel in an Outsourced Welding role, candidates need advanced welding skills, knowledge of various metals and welding techniques, and often a vocational certificate or equivalent experience. Familiarity with equipment such as MIG, TIG, and arc welders, as well as adherence to safety protocols and quality standards, is crucial. Strong soft skills include adaptability, effective communication, and the ability to work independently or within diverse teams. These skills ensure high-quality workmanship, safety compliance, and effective collaboration in outsourced, project-based work environments.

What are the typical responsibilities of an outsourced welder and how does the workflow differ from in-house welding positions?

Outsourced welders are usually contracted to complete specific projects or handle overflow work, often working on-site at client locations or from an external fabrication shop. Day-to-day tasks include interpreting technical drawings, preparing materials, performing precision welds, and ensuring all work meets client specifications and safety regulations. Unlike in-house welders who may handle repetitive production work, outsourced welders often face a wider variety of tasks and must quickly adapt to different environments and client needs. This structure requires excellent time management and problem-solving skills, making the role dynamic and well-suited to those who enjoy diverse projects and flexible work settings.

What is an Outsourced Welding job?

An Outsourced Welding job involves hiring external welding professionals or companies to handle welding tasks instead of maintaining in-house staff. Businesses use outsourced welding to reduce labor costs, access specialized expertise, and increase production efficiency. These welders may work on-site or at their facilities, depending on the project requirements. Industries such as manufacturing, construction, and automotive commonly rely on outsourced welding for temporary or specialized projects.

Job description

Weld Engineer (Contract) | Bellevue, WA (On-site)

System One is seeking a highly motivated Weld Engineer to support a Materials Development & Qualification team advancing next-generation materials and components for sodium-cooled fast reactors. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where your weld engineering and metallurgy expertise will influence how advanced components are designed, tested, qualified, and transitioned into supplier-ready manufacturing processes.

Location: Bellevue, WA (On-site) Type: Contract | 40 hrs/week Pay Rate: $63โ€“$80/hr (W2)

Why this role?

  • Contribute to advanced energy technology with direct design, qualification, and long-term deployment impact.
  • Own weld development from laboratory testing through manufacturing process definition with external suppliers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams and supplier partners to mature critical components.

What youโ€™ll do

  • Partner with project teams to provide guidance on welding configuration, joint geometry, and method selection for development programs.
  • Develop weld designs, specifications, and processes supporting design and licensing needs.
  • Shape and inform materials test programs to validate weld/material performance models and ensure program objectives are met.
  • Analyze and interpret test data (e.g., metallography, NDE results, mechanical testing, ductility) and create technical reports documenting results.
  • Support procurement of engineered components by leading technical development with suppliers to increase technology readiness for key items.

What weโ€™re looking for

Required / strongly preferred experience

  • B.S. + 3 years relevant experience (or M.S. + 2 years, or equivalent).
  • Degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Experience with weld engineering for new design (not just production support).
  • Ability to evaluate weld methods, joint geometries, and property impacts for piping, pressure vessels, and equipment.
  • Strong metallurgy foundation including welding/heat treatment of:
    • Ferrous alloys (e.g., austenitic and ferritic-martensitic steels)
    • Nonferrous alloys (e.g., nickel-base alloys)

Nice to have

  • Working knowledge of ASME NQA-1 and ASME Section IX
  • Experience qualifying welds for highly regulated applications
  • Understanding of weld design/parameter impacts on creep, fatigue, creep-fatigue, SCC, and fracture in high-temperature systems

Soft skills

  • Independent problem-solver with strong communication, integrity, and a collaborative working style.
