Outreach Intern information

What is an outreach intern?

Outreach Interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who support an organization's outreach efforts, such as community engagement, event planning, and public relations. They help coordinate campaigns, connect with target audiences, and assist in promoting the organization's mission or services. Outreach Interns often gain valuable experience in communication, networking, and project management while working under the guidance of experienced staff.

What types of projects and tasks can an outreach intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Outreach Intern, you will typically assist with organizing community events, drafting and sending communications to external partners, and supporting social media campaigns. You may also help with research to identify potential new contacts, track outreach metrics, and collaborate with other teams to coordinate efforts. These responsibilities offer hands-on experience in stakeholder engagement, project coordination, and communications—valuable skills for advancing in nonprofit, education, or corporate outreach roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outreach intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outreach Intern, you need strong communication skills, organizational abilities, and an understanding of community engagement, often supported by coursework or experience in public relations or marketing. Familiarity with social media platforms, email marketing tools, and event management software is commonly expected. Initiative, adaptability, and a collaborative attitude are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for effectively promoting programs, building relationships, and supporting outreach goals within organizations.

Job description

Sustainability Solutions Lab Internships

The Office of Sustainability and Environmental Affairs (SEA) is hiring two students to join the Sustainability Solutions Lab (SSL) Sustainability Abroad and Communications teams this fall. Internships are for students interested in taking on campus related challenges and developing solutions that advance Middlebury's sustainability and environmental leadership. This paid position consists of 3-5 hours of work per week from Monday, September 14-Friday, December 11, 2026 (with potential to continue for spring semester).

SEA develops, implements, and supports sustainability initiatives that achieve environmental, social, and economic goals throughout the campus community, College operations, and the community at large. The office works in different ways, from supporting independent student research projects to helping administrators and facilities staff with green campus infrastructure.

This is a Middlebury student position compensated at the Level B rate on the Midd student wage scale: $14.95 per hour

Core Responsibilities:

All interns are expected to meet weekly with their respective advisor(s) and team (if applicable). The remainder of hours will be used for independent work.

The following two positions are available:

Sustainability Abroad Intern

The sustainability abroad intern will work closely with the Study Abroad office, the Sustainability and Environmental Affairs office, and Middlebury's Sustainability Abroad working group to develop and advance Middlebury's sustainability abroad initiatives. This includes participating in, and working on projects directed by, the Sustainability Abroad Working Group, developing outreach materials and other materials explicitly connected to Middlebury's strategic plan, reviewing and updating sustainability abroad resources, working on the Global Partnerships for Sustainability (GPS) program, and cross-institutional research on initiatives abroad, among other projects.

In the cover letter for this position, please share why you are interested in sustainability abroad and whether there are any specific areas within the topic of sustainability abroad in which you are particularly interested. In addition, please indicate whether or not you have studied abroad and/or whether you intend to do so.

Communications Intern

Communications interns work on a variety of projects with the goal of effectively communicating sustainability and climate action at Middlebury. These projects can include, but are not limited to, social media outreach, graphic design, co-development of outreach strategy for Middlebury's STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System) report, events advertising, Energy2028 communications, website updates and design, and many others. Communications interns work collaboratively with SEA staff members and other experts to develop effective communications strategies for increasing awareness of holistic sustainability across campus.

In the cover letter for this position, please include any relevant previous experience in communications. In addition, include any specific project ideas/topics that you are interested in pursuing as part of this internship.
