Outpatient Nurse Coordinator - Benign Hematology (UPMC Presbyterian)
UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a dedicated and experienced nursing professional to join our Benign Hematology Team as an Outpatient Nurse Coordinator.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, daylight hours, in-person, no weekends or holidays
About the Position: The Hematology Infusion Department, located in the Falk Building, is responsible for delivering specialized patient care including the administration of chemotherapy and chemotherapy-related IV medications, IV and oral pain management, blood transfusions, IVIG, and other prescribed infusions. This role involves accessing and maintaining IV lines (including PICC lines and ports), performing venous blood draws and IV phlebotomy, assisting with bone marrow biopsies, and accurately following provider orders. Staff work closely with Vitalent team members while supporting daily operations such as restocking supplies, cleaning procedure rooms, and maintaining departmental task sheets. Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and attention to detail, obtain chemotherapy certification within 30-60 days if not already certified, and comply with all DOH, JCAHO, HIPAA, OSHA, and UPMC policies and protocols.
Responsibilities:
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and participate in shared governance and quality initiatives.
  • Provide leadership within the practice, supporting nursing and support staff and maintaining a safe, effective care environment.
  • Deliver holistic, patient-centered care, including triage, care coordination, education, and follow-up.
  • Serve as primary nursing resource and liaison for patient caseload, coordinating with physicians and external services.
  • Build positive, collaborative relationships with patients, families, and all care team members.
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking, clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Support department operations, safety, regulatory preparation, and practice improvements.
  • Educate patients, families, students, and new staff; may precept and assist with staff development.
  • Promote a compassionate, patient-focused experience and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years nursing experience. BSN preferred.
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.
  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within 30 days of hire
  • Preference for ACLS, required within 30 days
  • Registered Nurse (RN)

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
