Position Description Summary/Purpose:

The Network Administrator handles all aspects of the configuration and maintenance of the University and Magnet School networking environment. This position diagnoses and resolves problems quickly. The primary goal is to ensure that the University and Magnet School's network infrastructure runs smoothly and efficiently.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities:

  • Network infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, wireless access points/controllers, VPN appliances, network management platforms, and related systems.
  • Configure, maintain, and monitor enterprise firewalls, including rule creation and review, intrusion prevention, logging, and change management, to ensure secure, reliable network access while supporting instructional, administrative, and compliance requirements.
  • Configure and maintain VPN connections (L2TP, IPSec, SSL, site-to-site, client access).
  • Configure and maintain Layer 2 switches and maintain complex VLAN structures for segmenting administrative, instructional, and guest traffic.
  • Deploy and maintain campus-wide Wi-Fi environments and manage the eduroam authenticated roaming platform for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Utilize network management utilities to proactively monitor latency, throughput, and hardware health.
  • Adheres to cybersecurity best practices and proactively implements security controls to protect systems, networks, and data.
  • Acts in a Tier 2 and 3 Helpdesk support role as needed, and as a backup to the Tier 1 Helpdesk roles.
  • Responds to and presents information to inquiries and/or complaints from all levels within and outside the organization.
  • Leads technical discussions and solution design.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Conducts all work in a safe manner and all work safety practices are followed.

Other Functions:

  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
  • Continues professional development and training; keeps current with trends.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Requires an A.S. and/or 2 to 4 years of related experience, preferably in an educational environment
  • Preferred Certifications - Network+, Security+, Firewall certification from an industry leader (Cisco, Fortinet, Palo Alto, Check Point). CCNA is highly desirable
