Job description

The Switchman’s primary responsibility is to safely and efficiently switch rail cars, build outbound trains, inspect rail equipment, and support customer operations. The successful candidate will follow all operating procedures, safety requirements, and customer expectations while contributing to reliable rail service.

This position requires working overnight hours from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, on a rotating schedule that includes weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interact with other team members and the customers.
  • Participate in safety training programs, which may require travel to another location.
  • Willing to, on occasion, travel to other sites to assist with switching operations.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English.
  • Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Must pass a written and skills test related to the work to be performed.
  • Willing to assist with maintenance, clean-up, and other tasks requiring attention, as directed by the Operations Manager and/or Supervisor.

  • Follow all rules and procedures outlined by Cand rail.
  • Ability to work holidays, weekends, rotating shifts, and overtime when needed.
  • Operate rail car hand brakes.
  • Operate rail switches.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Rail industry experience is considered an asset.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Professional, dependable, and safety-focused work ethic.
  • Ability to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required.

Physical requirements & Working Conditions

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk long distances on uneven ballast surfaces.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work on elevated surfaces.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
  • Exposure to rail yard environments, equipment, noise, dust, and other site-specific conditions.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
