Description
Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic (KOC) is seeking an experienced, organized, and patient-focused Osteoporosis Medical Specialist to join our clinical team. This position combines direct provider support with the coordination of care for patients with osteoporosis, low bone density, and fragility fractures.
As an Osteoporosis Medical Specialist, you will work closely with physicians and Advanced Practice Providers throughout the patient-care process. You will assist during patient visits, gather and document clinical information, coordinate provider-ordered testing and treatment, provide approved patient education, and help patients remain engaged in their ongoing care.
The ideal candidate is an experienced Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who is comfortable working directly with providers, managing detailed clinical follow-up, and helping patients understand the next steps in their care.
What You'll Do
  • Work directly with physicians and Advanced Practice Providers to support the evaluation, treatment, and ongoing care of patients with osteoporosis, low bone density, and fragility fractures.
  • Review, screen, and track patients who meet established criteria for osteoporosis or fragility-fracture evaluation.
  • Gather and document medical history, fracture history, medications, previous treatments, and risk factors for provider review.
  • Prepare examination rooms, room patients, obtain vital signs, and assist providers during patient visits and clinical procedures within the Team Member's training, licensure, and authorized scope.
  • Coordinate provider-ordered DEXA scans, laboratory testing, imaging, referrals, prescriptions, and follow-up appointments.
  • Monitor outstanding orders, results, referrals, and treatment requirements and follow through to support timely completion.
  • Communicate provider-approved treatment instructions, test results, and next steps to patients.
  • Provide approved education regarding osteoporosis, medication adherence, fracture and fall prevention, calcium and vitamin D intake, exercise, home safety, and recommended lifestyle changes.
  • Monitor patient follow-through and notify the provider of medication concerns, adverse effects, changes in condition, or barriers to care.
  • Coordinate communication among KOC providers, primary care providers, specialists, imaging facilities, pharmacies, and other members of the patient's care team.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and an up-to-date osteoporosis patient registry for tracking, quality improvement, and program reporting.
  • Assist with audits, data collection, clinical messages, forms, and other provider-directed clinical and administrative responsibilities as needed.
What We're Looking For
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Completion of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent clinical training with relevant medical assisting experience; or
    • Current, unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse license valid for practice in Tennessee.
  • Previous experience as a Medical Assistant, LPN, or comparable clinical support professional in a physician practice, outpatient clinic, or similar healthcare environment.
  • Experience working directly with physicians or Advanced Practice Providers to support patient care.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, medications, patient-rooming procedures, clinical workflows, and electronic health record documentation.
  • Ability to gather, review, and document clinical information accurately.
  • Strong organizational, communication, patient-service, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to manage patient outreach, clinical tasks, test results, and recurring deadlines with accuracy.
  • Ability to explain provider-approved information clearly and compassionately to patients and families.
  • Ability to recognize questions, symptoms, or concerns that require review by a physician or Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Ability to perform responsibilities within the Team Member's training, licensure, authorized scope of practice, and KOC policies.
  • Commitment to patient confidentiality, safety, and high-quality care.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records, clinical databases, scheduling systems, email, spreadsheets, and common office applications.
Preferred Experience
  • Current Medical Assistant certification, such as CMA, RMA, or an equivalent credential.
  • Experience in orthopaedics, osteoporosis care, fracture prevention, endocrinology, rheumatology, women's health, geriatrics, or another specialty practice.
  • Familiarity with DEXA scans, osteoporosis risk factors, fragility fractures, and osteoporosis treatment workflows.
  • Experience coordinating diagnostic testing, referrals, medications, and continued patient follow-up.
  • Experience maintaining patient registries, clinical databases, or quality-improvement data.
  • Clinical scribing or direct provider-support experience.
  • Experience with NextGen or a comparable electronic health record system.
Schedule & Work Environment
This position works in a busy medical-office and clinical environment with frequent interaction with patients, families, physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, and other Team Members. The role requires regular movement throughout clinical areas, along with periods of sitting and computer use.
The position may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, infectious materials, cleaning products, and other hazards commonly present in a healthcare setting. Appropriate personal protective equipment and safety procedures must be used as required. Occasional travel to other KOC locations, meetings, or training may be required.
