How much do professional medical assistant jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for professional medical assistant in the United States is $19.89, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.07 and $21.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Professional Medical Assistants?

Professional Medical Assistants are healthcare workers trained to perform both administrative and clinical tasks in medical settings such as hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices. They may take patient histories, measure vital signs, assist with examinations, administer medications, and manage patient records. Their role is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of healthcare facilities and providing quality care to patients. Most Professional Medical Assistants complete a postsecondary program and may become certified to enhance their job prospects.

What is the highest paid medical assistant job?

The highest paid medical assistants typically work in specialized settings such as outpatient care centers, surgical hospitals, or clinics requiring advanced skills and certifications. They may earn higher salaries by gaining additional certifications, experience, or working in regions with higher cost of living. Overall, salaries vary based on location, experience, and specialization, but advanced roles tend to offer the highest compensation for medical assistants.

What jobs pay 10,000 a month without a degree?

A professional medical assistant typically earns less than $10,000 per month, but some high-paying roles like sales managers, real estate brokers, or certain skilled trades can reach or exceed that income without a degree. These jobs often require experience, certifications, or specialized skills rather than formal higher education.

How to make $100,000 as a medical assistant?

Achieving a $100,000 salary as a medical assistant typically requires gaining extensive experience, obtaining specialized certifications, working in high-paying settings such as outpatient clinics or specialty practices, and possibly taking on supervisory or administrative roles. Increasing skills in areas like phlebotomy, EHR systems, or medical billing can also enhance earning potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Professional Medical Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Medical Assistant, you need knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and administrative tasks, typically acquired through a medical assisting program and certification such as CMA or RMA. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), scheduling systems, and basic laboratory equipment is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask set outstanding medical assistants apart. These competencies ensure efficient patient care, accurate record-keeping, and smooth workflow in fast-paced healthcare environments.

What is the difference between Professional Medical Assistant vs Medical Assistant?

AspectProfessional Medical AssistantMedical Assistant
CertificationsOften requires certification (e.g., CMA, RMA)May or may not require certification
Work EnvironmentClinics, hospitals, outpatient careClinics, physician offices, outpatient settings
Job ResponsibilitiesClinical tasks, patient care, administrative dutiesAdministrative and clinical tasks, patient interaction
Employer & Industry UsageHealthcare facilities, hospitals, clinicsMedical offices, outpatient clinics, healthcare providers

Professional Medical Assistants typically have more advanced certifications and may perform a broader range of clinical duties compared to Medical Assistants. Both roles work in similar healthcare environments, but Professional Medical Assistants often handle more complex patient care tasks and may have additional responsibilities depending on their certification and experience.

How do Professional Medical Assistants typically balance administrative and clinical duties throughout the workday?

Professional Medical Assistants often juggle both administrative tasks, such as scheduling and patient record management, and clinical duties like taking vital signs and assisting with exams. The balance can vary depending on the size and specialty of the medical practice, but most Medical Assistants alternate between the front desk and exam rooms based on patient flow and staff needs. Effective time management and strong communication skills are essential to switch between roles seamlessly. Collaborating closely with nurses, physicians, and office staff helps ensure that both patient care and office operations run smoothly.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

Professional medical assistants typically do not earn $2000 a day; their salaries are usually lower and based on hourly wages or annual salaries. High-paying jobs that can reach $2000 daily often include specialized roles such as surgeons, anesthesiologists, or certain executive positions, which require advanced certifications, extensive experience, and work in high-demand environments. These roles often involve complex skills, long hours, and significant responsibility.
