The Underground Fiber OSP Laborer supports the construction, installation, and maintenance of underground fiber-optic infrastructure. This position focuses on underground utility work including trenching, conduit placement, vacuum excavation, and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) support. The role requires physical stamina, strong safety awareness, and the ability to travel extensively while working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in all phases of underground fiber OSP construction, including loading and unloading materials, driving support vehicles, digging, and handling tools and equipment.
- Support horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations, including drill setup, rod handling, bore support, and jobsite cleanup.
- Install underground conduit, handholes, vaults, and fiber-optic cable according to project specifications.
- Perform vacuum excavation (vac) and potholing to safely locate, verify, and expose existing underground utilities.
- Read and work from utility locates, construction prints, and jobsite markings to prevent utility damage.
- Maintain drill equipment, vac units, and hand tools in proper and safe working condition.
- Transport equipment, materials, and crews to and from job sites safely and efficiently.
- Set up and maintain traffic control and safety perimeters using cones, signage, barricades, and barriers.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Communicate effectively with drill operators, foremen, and crew members to ensure coordinated and safe operations.
- Travel to project locations up to 80% of the time, including overnight and out-of-area assignments as required.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, rain, snow, humidity, and high winds.
- Perform additional underground construction duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred.
- Previous experience in underground utilities, fiber OSP, HDD, or construction is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of underground safety practices, including 811/One Call locates, potholing, and working around live utilities.
- Ability to operate and assist in the maintenance of drill equipment, vac trucks, and other construction tools.
- Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials of varying sizes and weights throughout the workday.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for maintaining equipment and tools.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively and work outdoors year-round in demanding weather conditions.
