What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OSP Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OSP Engineer, you need a solid understanding of outside plant (OSP) design, fiber optic and copper cabling, and telecommunications infrastructure, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with GIS mapping software, AutoCAD, and industry standards such as BICSI or FOA certifications is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating with field teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure the efficient and safe design, installation, and maintenance of telecommunications networks.

What are some common challenges faced by OSP Engineers during field deployment, and how can they be addressed?

OSP Engineers often encounter challenges such as unexpected underground obstructions, right-of-way issues, and coordinating with multiple utility providers during field deployment. To overcome these obstacles, effective pre-construction surveys, regular communication with local authorities, and adaptability in redesigning routes are essential. Many teams rely on advanced GIS tools and close collaboration with construction crews to minimize delays and ensure project success.

What is the difference between Osp Engineer vs Fiber Optic Technician?

AspectOsp EngineerFiber Optic Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or related field, certifications like FOA or BICSIOften requires technical certifications such as FOA or BICSI, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesign, plan, and oversee outdoor fiber optic network installations, often in field and office settingsInstall, splice, and test fiber optic cables primarily in the field
Employer & IndustryTelecom companies, network providers, infrastructure firmsTelecom, internet service providers, construction contractors

Osp Engineers focus on planning and managing outdoor fiber optic networks, requiring engineering knowledge and project oversight. Fiber Optic Technicians handle the hands-on installation and testing of fiber cables. Both roles are essential in fiber optic network deployment but differ mainly in scope and responsibilities.

What is an OSP Engineer?

An OSP (Outside Plant) Engineer is a telecommunications professional responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of external communication networks, such as fiber optic and copper cabling between buildings, utility poles, and underground systems. Their work includes planning routes, ensuring compliance with regulations, and coordinating with construction teams to deploy infrastructure safely and efficiently. OSP Engineers play a vital role in expanding and maintaining the networks that deliver internet, telephone, and other communication services to homes and businesses.

Job description

Your Impact:

We are seeking a self-motivated, detail-oriented OSP Engineer to manage engineering efforts related to road moves, highway widening, and public infrastructure projects. This role requires close coordination with state/local agencies, DOT, utility companies, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure the timely and efficient relocation or protection of telecom infrastructure.

The ideal candidate has a strong engineering background, the ability to work independently in a remote environment, and excellent communication skills to support projects from design through construction.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead OSP engineering tasks for road move and highway widening projects, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.

  • Coordinate with DOT, municipalities, utilities, and contractors to align relocation plans with road construction schedules.

  • Perform field surveys, site walks, and impact assessments on aerial, buried, and underground infrastructure.

  • Develop engineering designs, construction packages, and relocation plans for fiber/copper cable, pole transfers, conduit adjustments, and related facilities.

  • Provide cost estimates, materials lists, and project timelines.

  • Serve as the primary engineering contact during planning, permitting, and construction phases.

  • Maintain accurate documentation: as-builts, CAD drawings, GIS updates, and permit packages.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Construction, Planning, and Permitting teams.

  • Ensure compliance with RUS, NESC, and company design standards.

Core Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 3-5+ years OSP Engineering experience, ideally with roadway relocation or utility coordination projects.

  • Strong knowledge of OSP design (aerial & underground), construction methods, and permitting.

  • Experience working with state DOTs, municipalities, and 3rd-party contractors.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, Microsoft Office, and OSP design software.

  • Excellent project management, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently in field environments and manage multiple priorities.

  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to respond to changing project demands.

  • Strong listening skills with the ability to follow directions and apply feedback effectively.

  • May assist with training and onboarding new team members.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with DOT projects and utility coordination on large-scale road or infrastructure efforts.

  • Knowledge of ROW (Right-of-Way) regulations and permitting processes.

  • Familiarity with fiber optic splicing, restoration, and network design.

  • Experience with systems such as ARAMIS, LFACS, MIC, WALDO, and TIRKS.

Work Environment & Requirements
  • Remote role with required fieldwork (site surveys & construction coordination).

  • Candidate must reside within 1 hour of Covington, LA or New Orleans
