Job Purpose:
The Orthopedic Technician works directly with the Orthopedic Doctors and Surgeons in the treatment of bone and joint injuries. Principally, orthopedic technology involves the application and removal of casts, splints and braces; however, an orthopedic technician must also instruct patients in caring for their injuries, understand and adjust traction equipment and be able to adjust crutches, walkers and other aids and provide instructions to patients in their use.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
โข Fits patients with OTS and custom fabricated DME product, fabricate custom orthotics
โข Applies and removes Cast and Splints, applies dressings, and remove staples/sutures as needed
โข Orders supplies for the clinic
โข Oversees the DME store
โข Checks patient benefits for DME items not applied in clinic setting
โข Prepares injured areas for cast application by covering with specified protective material
โข Wets, wraps, and molds plaster bandages around area of fracture
โข Trims plaster using electric cutter
โข Removes whole and broken casts and alters position of cast to change setting of patient's limb or body part, as directed
โข Assembles wooden, metal, plastic, or plaster material to make orthopedic splints
โข Assists orthopedic patients through all phases of clinic visit
โข Obtains parts for prescribed traction equipment
โข Visually inspects traction in use and reports findings to appropriate physician
โข Maintains traction during patient transfers
โข Instructs clinical personnel in principles and maintenance of traction
โข Prepares surgical suite for orthopedic surgeries by arranging appropriate equipment
โข Maintains cast room supply inventory
โข Cleans work area and tools
โข Provides and promotes excellent customer service for all internal and external customers
โข May attend surgical rounds if needed

Education and Experience Requirements:
โข High School Diploma or GED, required
โข Ability to obtain Registered Orthopedic Technician (ROT) certification successfully within 6 months from date of hire and maintain certification renewal every 2 years, required
โข Once year certificate in Orthotics/Prosthetics/Casting or equivalent from a college or technical school, preferred
โข A minimum of two years of healthcare experience, preferred
โข Working knowledge Microsoft and Google suites, preferred
โข Working knowledge of ECW and Breg Vision, preferred
Environmental/Working Conditions:
Working environment is in an office/clinic setting.
Physical/Mental Demands:
โข Sit, stand, walk, and remain stationary for long periods of time
โข Lift, carry, and push patients or objects up to 200 pounds
โข Finger dexterity, the ability to twist hands/wrists repetitively, type on a keyboard/operate phones and operate medical tools
โข Vision (e.g., depth perception, color vision, strong vision up close), Hearing (e.g., high pitch sounds, soft or distant sounds
