To thrive as an Orthopaedic Oncologist, you need advanced medical knowledge in both orthopaedic surgery and oncology, supported by completion of medical school, residency, and specialized fellowships, along with board certification. Experience with surgical planning software, advanced imaging technologies, and familiarity with tumor registry and documentation systems is essential. What are the typical responsibilities of an orthopaedic oncologist during a workweek?
Orthopaedic Oncologists spend their workweek evaluating patients, diagnosing and staging bone and soft tissue tumors, performing complex surgical procedures, and collaborating with radiologists, medical oncologists, and other specialists to create comprehensive treatment plans. They may also participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, conduct follow-up visits, and engage in research or teaching activities. Responsibilities can include managing both inpatient and outpatient cases, supporting patients through treatment decisions, and ensuring continuity of care post-surgery. The role is dynamic and intellectually stimulating, often balancing direct patient care with team-based collaboration.
What does an orthopaedic oncologist do?
An Orthopaedic Oncologist is a specialized doctor who diagnoses and treats bone and soft tissue tumors, both benign and malignant. They manage conditions like osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and metastatic bone disease, often working closely with oncologists, radiologists, and surgeons. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination to preserve function and limb integrity. Their goal is to remove tumors while maintaining mobility and quality of life for patients.
