As an ORISE research fellow, you may engage in a broad range of projects, often focused on public health, environmental science, or data analysis, depending on the sponsoring agency. Fellows usually work closely with a mentor or team and are expected to take initiative in managing day-to-day tasks, while also collaborating with experienced scientists. The level of independence varies, but most fellows are encouraged to develop their own research ideas within the framework of the program, which helps build both technical expertise and project management skills.

What are ORISE fellowships?

ORISE (Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education) fellowships are research and training opportunities offered by the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal agencies. These fellowships are designed for students, recent graduates, and professionals to gain hands-on experience in scientific research, public health, and policy analysis. Participants work alongside experienced mentors at federal research facilities, gaining valuable skills and networking opportunities. ORISE appointments vary in length and can help further a career in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
