How much do organoid jobs pay per year?
What is the difference between Organoid vs Cell Culture Technician?
| Aspect | Organoid | Cell Culture Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required credentials | Typically requires a degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or related fields; advanced training in 3D cell culture techniques | Usually requires a degree or diploma in biology, biotechnology, or related areas; training in cell culture methods |
| Work environment | Research laboratories, biotech companies, academic institutions focusing on 3D tissue models | Laboratories, biotech firms, hospitals performing routine cell culture procedures |
| Employer and industry usage | Used in biomedical research, drug development, personalized medicine | Used in research labs, quality control, manufacturing processes involving cell cultures |
In summary, an Organoid specializes in creating 3D tissue models for advanced research, requiring specialized skills and training. A Cell Culture Technician performs routine cell cultivation tasks, often with less specialized training, supporting various laboratory functions.

Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a GSOM Director-Organoid Facility.
The Institute for Regenerative Medicine seeks an accomplished and collaborative Director to lead the development, implementation, and expansion of a state-of-the-art organoid core. The Director will be responsible for establishing robust organoid and gene editing workflows that directly support investigator needs, building standardized and scalable operating procedures, ensuring rigorous quality control, and expanding facility capabilities over time. This role will require close partnership with faculty, laboratory personnel, and institutional core facilities to create a highly responsive, efficient, and scientifically rigorous resource that advances regenerative medicine.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Establish and implement foundational organoid platforms
Work closely with the initial group of priority investigators to assess and meet their organoid-related research needs.
Establish organoid protocols for at least one lineage derived from each of the three germ layers.
Develop these three germ layer organoid systems in parallel to build broad foundational capability efficiently.
Interface directly with individual laboratories to ensure protocols are optimized for their scientific and experimental needs.
Translate laboratory-specific SOPs into standardized Core SOPs that support reproducibility, scalability, and shared facility operations.
Implement all necessary cell line tracking, documentation, and quality control procedures to support rigorous and reliable core operations.
2. Build gene editing capabilities within the facility
Obtain and evaluate gene editing protocols from key internal and external collaborators.
Work directly with relevant laboratory personnel, including postdoctoral fellows, to adapt and refine protocols for facility implementation.
Engage with high-performing external gene editing programs to identify operational best practices and efficient models that could inform facility development.
Establish gene editing workflows that can be deployed in support of investigator projects.
Finalize standardized SOPs for gene editing services within the facility.
Partner with the NYU Genome Engineering Core to explore opportunities for cross-training personnel and leveraging existing institutional expertise and resources.
3. Introduce automation to enhance throughput and efficiency
After the needs of the initial faculty users have been successfully met and foundational workflows are operating effectively, identify opportunities to introduce automation into high-throughput processes.
Develop automation strategies for applications such as qPCR workflows, 96-well organoid generation, and other scalable processes as appropriate.
Evaluate and implement technologies that improve efficiency, reproducibility, and capacity while maintaining high scientific quality.
4. Expand facility services and institutional engagement
Broaden the facility's service offerings to support additional investigators across NYULH.
Develop and implement regular training programs for users, including faculty, trainees, and research staff.
Promote best practices in organoid culture, gene editing, quality control, and experimental reproducibility.
Serve as a scientific and operational resource for the institutional research community in organoid model development and related technologies
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent in stem cell biology, developmental biology, regenerative medicine, cell biology, bioengineering, or a related field.
Significant experience developing and implementing organoid culture systems.
Demonstrated expertise in SOP development, laboratory standardization, and quality control systems. Prior experience in establishing similar facilities highly desirable.
Experience with genome engineering and gene editing platforms, including adapting protocols for shared-resource or core settings.
Strong understanding of cell line tracking, QC documentation, and reproducibility standards.
Experience working collaboratively with faculty and research teams in a service-oriented environment.
Familiarity with laboratory automation and high-throughput workflows is highly desirable.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
