Job description

Why This Role Matters

As a Community Organizer, you will play a key role in advancing Planned Parenthood South Atlantic's (PPSAT) mission by building grassroots power and mobilizing supporters throughout Virginia, with a focus on the Charlottesville and Roanoke communities. You'll cultivate meaningful relationships with volunteers, community leaders, and coalition partners while driving advocacy, civic engagement, and electoral efforts that protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care. This is an exciting opportunity to organize year-round campaigns that create lasting community impact and help elect leaders who champion reproductive freedom.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a passionate, relationship-driven organizer who thrives in community settings and is energized by building movements for change. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience organizing in Virginia, particularly in electoral, issue-based, or community organizing.

  • A passion for reproductive freedom, abortion access, and health equity.

  • At least two years of paid or volunteer grassroots organizing experience.

  • Experience using organizing tactics such as canvassing, phone banking, relational organizing, and volunteer mobilization.

  • The ability to organize effectively in fast-paced, deadline-driven, or rapid-response environments.

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to engage diverse communities.

  • Confidence in public speaking and representing an organization in community settings.

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills.

  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a cross-functional team.

  • A commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-centered organizing.

What You'll Do

As a Community Organizer, you'll build grassroots power by recruiting, training, and mobilizing volunteers while strengthening relationships across your assigned region. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Community Organizing & Volunteer Engagement

  • Recruit, train, mentor, and mobilize volunteers and community leaders to advance PPSAT's advocacy and electoral priorities.

  • Develop and maintain a strong volunteer network through grassroots outreach, voter engagement, leadership development, and community events.

  • Build authentic relationships with community members, coalition partners, and local organizations.

  • Represent PPSAT throughout your assigned communities at meetings, events, and public forums.

  • Identify community needs and independently develop organizing plans that support PPSAT's mission.

Advocacy & Electoral Organizing

  • Support local, state, and federal advocacy campaigns focused on reproductive health, rights, and justice.

  • Organize rapid-response actions, rallies, lobby days, and other advocacy events.

  • Participate in legislative activities during General Assembly sessions, helping connect constituents with elected officials and supporting policy initiatives.

  • Coordinate voter education and voter engagement efforts, including volunteer training, phone banks, canvassing, and candidate engagement.

  • Participate in statewide and regional electoral coalitions to advance organizing goals.

Coalition & Constituency Engagement

  • Strengthen partnerships with advocacy organizations, community leaders, and coalition members.

  • Support constituency organizing programs, including Black Organizing, Raíz, and other community engagement initiatives.

  • Develop leadership opportunities for young people and maintain relationships with student organizations, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

  • Partner with the Patient Advocacy Program to engage patients and community members in advocacy opportunities.

Communications & Data Management

  • Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications team to implement digital organizing campaigns and social media engagement.

  • Maintain accurate volunteer and program data using organizing databases.

  • Support public speaking opportunities and media engagement as appropriate.

Administrative & Team Responsibilities

  • Complete administrative tasks, including reporting, data entry, and required documentation.

  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and solution-oriented work environment.

  • Follow all PPSAT policies, procedures, training requirements, and attendance expectations.

Flexible Schedule

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position. Standard hours are generally Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., working remotely or in the community. Evening and weekend work are regularly required to support community events, volunteer activities, advocacy campaigns, and elections.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in grassroots organizing, preferably in issue advocacy and/or electoral campaigns.

  • Experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteers.

  • Demonstrated experience organizing with diverse communities and advancing equity-centered initiatives.

  • Experience working alongside communities of color in advocacy, organizing, or electoral campaigns.

  • Commitment to Planned Parenthood's mission and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice.

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to explain complex public policy issues in clear, accessible language.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office applications, email, and calendar platforms.
