About This Role

Board members serve as ambassadors, advisors, and fiduciaries for SHADES of Development, providing governance, strategic direction, financial oversight, fundraising support, and community engagement to help advance the organization's mission.


What You'll Do
  • Regularly attend Board meetings
  • Demonstrate support for SHADES of Development cause by promoting its good work, generating goodwill for the organization, encouraging support for its efforts, and keeping informed about its programs and activities
  • Contribute knowledge and skills in at least one area essential to Board functioning: Finance, Programming, Volunteerism, Governance, Public Awareness and Advocacy
  • Help promote SHADES of Development visibility and advocate for its programs
  • Help develop SHADES of Development financial or other resources
  • Participate in hiring the President and reviewing the President’s performance annually
  • Participate in reviewing strategic plans and setting long-term priorities
  • Participate in reviewing and approving an annual budget for the organization and reviewing its revenues and expenses on a quarterly basis
  • Ensure that SHADES of Development's mission is being upheld and its finances managed in a sound and ethical manner
  • Participate in SHADES of Development events, award ceremonies and fundraising meetings
  • Help SHADES of Development understand and reach diverse communities and grow its service area
  • Set procedures and policies to ensure that the corporation is organized and managed in an accountable, fair and systematic manner and in compliance with applicable law

Requirements
  • Attend scheduled Board meetings each year
  • Act on behalf of the corporation and its interests, putting aside personal concerns, affiliations or constituencies
  • Serve on at least one Board committee
  • Make an annual personal financial or in kind contribution to SHADES of Development
  • Help staff to promote SHADES of Development good work and visibility, introducing the organization to new communities, corporate sponsors, foundations, media and helpful individuals and potential partners
  • Contribute expertise in particular areas of nonprofit management, governance, finance, service, or other areas that advance SHADES of Development mission and strategy
  • Make visits and/or volunteer at SHADES sites periodically
