Position and Scope

EHS Specialist
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented EHS Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will play a critical part in supporting our safety culture and environmental compliance efforts. This office based role works primarily with the Environmental Compliance team working with the Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS) and its day-to-day operations. This role acts as the SEMS Leader by providing training, responding to inquiries regarding system
functionality, responding to user requests and updating data within the system. Managing updates to the EHS management system documentation and communicating revised processes to all stakeholders is required. A highly organized individual with good computer skills, you will also support reporting of EHS data and KPIs to the Corporate level and help to maintain Compliance Sites such as ISN or Avetta.

Key Accountabilities of the position include:

  • Analyze Issues - Gathers relevant information systematically; considers a broad range of issues or factors; grasps complexities and perceives relationships among problems or issues; seeks input from others; uses accurate logic in analyses.
  • Attention to detail - Strong computer skills; able to manage, analyze, and accurately report data from SEMS; strong communication skills to understand user issues and explain the solution.
  • Assist with Environmental Auditing - Environmental auditing is the process of evaluating conformance/compliance with established regulatory, ISO 14001, and internal requirements. The effectiveness of an internal audit program is almost entirely dependent upon the skills, training, and experience of the Audit Team Leader and Audit Team members. Auditors should be functionally aware of all areas of environmental management and possess an expert level understanding of the criteria to which they are auditing. Where applicable, the audit program should be structured in a manner that will facilitate the integration of safety management system audits.
  • Reporting - Strong organizational skills and ability to work with multiple internal stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Communication skills and the ability to influence others.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office or Google equivalents in a professional capacity.
  • The ability to work as a member of a team and independently on projects.
  • Business acumen, strong analytical skills, strategic thinking abilities, and an understanding of organizational behavior.
  • ISN, Complyworks, Avetta, Contractor Check knowledge and/or experience an asset
  • A thorough knowledge of applicable government regulations, environmental regulations, and safety compliance an asset.

Minimum Education

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma
  • Valid Class 5 or G License

Minimum Work Experience

  • Three to five years of related Health and Safety work experience

  • Strong computer, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent safety and health track record in programs and processes.
  • Experience in training and education.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Professional and positive attitude, excellent work ethic, strong desire to learn and succeed.
  • Ability to work independently and capable of forming strong working relationships and partnerships.
  • Knowledge of environmental and health and safety legislation.
  • Experience with TDG, both handling and transportation is considered an asset.
  • Calm demeanor in emergency situations.
