What is organic search in digital marketing?

Organic search refers to the process by which users find websites or online content through unpaid search engine results, typically by using search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo. Unlike paid search ads, organic search results are ranked based on their relevance to the user's query, quality of content, and website authority. Improving organic search visibility involves search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, such as optimizing keywords, creating quality content, and building backlinks. Success in organic search can drive long-term, sustainable traffic to a website without ongoing ad spend. It is a crucial component of most digital marketing strategies.

What are typical challenges faced by professionals in organic search roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in organic search often face challenges such as keeping up with frequent search engine algorithm updates, managing client or stakeholder expectations for results, and balancing long-term strategy with the need for quick wins. Staying current through industry blogs and SEO communities, setting clear communication about realistic timelines, and regularly auditing and adjusting strategies are key ways to address these challenges. Collaboration with content creators, developers, and data analysts is also crucial for implementing effective SEO initiatives and achieving measurable progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an organic search specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Organic Search Specialist, you need a solid understanding of SEO best practices, keyword research, and analytics, often supported by experience in digital marketing or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, SEMrush, and Ahrefs is typically required, along with certifications such as Google Analytics Individual Qualification (GAIQ) being advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills are critical for improving website visibility, driving organic traffic, and ensuring measurable business growth in competitive digital landscapes.

Job description

Senior SEO & Organic Growth Specialist

Grinnell, Iowa | Hybrid, 3 to 4 Days Onsite

Brownells is looking for a Senior SEO & Organic Growth Specialist to help customers more easily discover our products, expertise, and content across traditional search engines and emerging AI-powered discovery platforms. As a leading name in the firearms and outdoor industry, Brownells offers the opportunity to apply your SEO expertise to a large, specialized eCommerce catalog and highly engaged customer base.

This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role for someone who understands both the technical and content sides of SEO and knows how to turn search visibility into measurable eCommerce growth. You’ll work across the website, focusing on technical site health, content strategy, AEO/GEO, and emerging search practices to improve qualified traffic, conversion, and revenue.

What You'll Do

  • Execute and optimize SEO and organic growth initiatives to increase visibility, qualified traffic, conversion, and eCommerce revenue
  • Conduct keyword research, competitive analysis, content gap analysis, and search trend research to identify growth opportunities
  • Optimize product detail pages, category pages, landing pages, and educational content for discoverability, customer relevance, and conversion
  • Perform technical SEO audits and recommend improvements related to crawlability, indexation, site architecture, structured data, internal linking, redirects, migrations, and website performance
  • Partner with developers, content specialists, designers, merchandising, and other stakeholders to ensure SEO recommendations are implemented effectively
  • Analyze organic search and eCommerce performance using Google Analytics, Google Search Console, SEMrush, and related tools, translating findings into actionable priorities
  • Implement and evolve AEO/GEO practices to improve visibility across AI-powered search experiences
  • Identify content opportunities across the customer buying journey and stay current on search engine changes, AI search developments, and evolving eCommerce SEO best practices

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, merchandising, advertising, communications, or related field, or equivalent relevant experience
  • 3+ years of experience in SEO, eCommerce marketing, organic growth, content marketing, or a closely related digital marketing discipline; 5+ years preferred
  • Strong knowledge of eCommerce SEO, content optimization, and organic growth best practices
  • Experience with keyword research, technical SEO audits, competitive analysis, and organic performance analysis
  • Strong understanding of crawlability, indexation, site architecture, internal linking, structured data, redirects, and website performance
  • Proficiency with Google Analytics, Google Search Console, SEMrush, or comparable SEO and analytics platforms
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to turn performance data into practical recommendations
  • Strong written communication, attention to detail, and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities and collaborate across technical, creative, merchandising, and business teams

Preferred Experience

  • eCommerce, retail, or large product-catalog environments
  • Military, law enforcement, tactical, outdoor, workwear, performance apparel, or adjacent consumer markets
  • Conversion rate optimization or customer journey optimization
  • AEO, GEO, AI-powered search, or emerging discovery technologies
  • Experience with large-scale site changes, redesigns, migrations, CMS, PIM, or product content management environments

Why Brownells

Search is evolving quickly, and this role will help shape how Brownells competes across both traditional and AI-powered discovery. You’ll have the opportunity to influence a large eCommerce catalog, strengthen the technical and content foundations behind organic growth, and directly connect your work to customer experience and business performance.

Work Arrangement & Compensation

This position is hybrid in Grinnell, Iowa, with an onsite expectation of 3 to 4 days per week.

Salary starts at $65,000, adjusted based on experience, plus bonus potential of up to 12%.

Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, a 5% 401(k) match, paid time off, paid holidays, exclusive employee discounts, and more.

If you’re a hands-on SEO professional who enjoys digging into data, solving technical challenges, and turning search insights into measurable eCommerce growth, we’d like to hear from you.
