What is organic search in digital marketing?

Organic search refers to the process by which users find websites or online content through unpaid search engine results, typically by using search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo. Unlike paid search ads, organic search results are ranked based on their relevance to the user's query, quality of content, and website authority. Improving organic search visibility involves search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, such as optimizing keywords, creating quality content, and building backlinks. Success in organic search can drive long-term, sustainable traffic to a website without ongoing ad spend. It is a crucial component of most digital marketing strategies.

What are typical challenges faced by professionals in organic search roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in organic search often face challenges such as keeping up with frequent search engine algorithm updates, managing client or stakeholder expectations for results, and balancing long-term strategy with the need for quick wins. Staying current through industry blogs and SEO communities, setting clear communication about realistic timelines, and regularly auditing and adjusting strategies are key ways to address these challenges. Collaboration with content creators, developers, and data analysts is also crucial for implementing effective SEO initiatives and achieving measurable progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an organic search specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Organic Search Specialist, you need a solid understanding of SEO best practices, keyword research, and analytics, often supported by experience in digital marketing or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, SEMrush, and Ahrefs is typically required, along with certifications such as Google Analytics Individual Qualification (GAIQ) being advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills are critical for improving website visibility, driving organic traffic, and ensuring measurable business growth in competitive digital landscapes.

Description

Now is the time to join PDS Health. You will have opportunities to learn new skills from our team of experienced professionals.

Overview

The SEO Marketing Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of PDS Health's search visibility strategy โ€” spanning traditional SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO), and generative engine optimization (GEO) โ€” across multiple national and localized PDS websites. The role will have a strong understanding of search engine algorithms, AI-generated answer systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews/AI Mode, Gemini), ranking strategies, and industry standards. This role requires a strategic and analytical mindset, commercial fluency, and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. The Manager will work closely with cross-functional teams to drive organic traffic and AI-driven visibility, increase conversions and appointment volume, and enhance PDS Health's discoverability and citation presence across both traditional and AI-powered search. This role will also examine how we work as a team, and look to upskill our team & redefine how we approach work utilizing AI & automation.

  • Responsible metatag/structured-data maintenance and improvement

  • Own local and practice-level AI visibility: ensure PDS-affiliated practices surface and are cited correctly when patients query AI systems for local/condition-specific care (e.g., \"best dentist near me,\" \"dentist that treats X\"); partner with Field Marketing and the MOD/Yext data pipeline to ensure listing and entity data quality supports this

  • Collaborate with teams across channels to develop category strategies against dental industry and specialty markets, including how PDS Health is represented in AI-generated category comparisons; derive and deliver tangible business value from this holistic approach

  • Collaborate with web developers, editors, video producers, marketing, design, and product to ensure all relevant activities that could benefit from search or AI visibility are optimized

  • Build the internal and field team's understanding of SEO, AEO, and GEO and monitor execution by documenting guidelines and training as needed

  • Monitor and administer web analytics dashboards, AI visibility monitoring tools, and key reporting platforms; provide regular reports connecting site traffic and AI citation performance to business outcomes, and make recommendations to strengthen user experience and discoverability
