Job description

Position Overview
The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for adhering to state and federal regulations in the performance of pharmacy-related data entry and patient registration activities. This position is responsible for the resolution of third-party rejections and responding to high-volume customer inquiries, working under direct supervision. This position follows standard operating procedures and performs duties in accordance with organizational policies and procedures. The Pharmacy Technician is also responsible for using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information.

Essential Functions
  • Processes new patient registration by entering data into the pharmacy software system
  • Handles patient prescription requests within HIPAA guidelines and enter refill orders for processing
  • Troubleshoots to obtain missing prescription information, and interprets medical abbreviations (SIG codes)
  • Resolves all data entry-related exceptions
  • Transitions inventory through different workflow stages with a focus on quality control
  • Counts and fills prescriptions
  • Cleans and helps maintain the pharmacy and keep the work area orderly
  • Resolves Third Party Rejects by reviewing, gathering information, making corrections and resubmitting for processing according to individual plan requirements
  • Provides assistance to Pharmacists by identifying and communicating issues as appropriate
  • Performs duties and responsibilities according to the philosophy and standards of the organization, including conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm and positive attitudes in work situations with clients, peers and visitors
  • Maintains client and associate confidentiality.
  • Responsible for understanding all the applicable policies and procedures of the department necessary to perform essential job functions as well as the employee handbook.
  • The position may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those stated in this description as directed by the Pharmacy Manager.
  • Adheres to the organization's prescription data entry procedures and guidelines
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Work-Related Experience
  • Preferred to have a least 1-year experience in retail pharmacy environment as a Pharmacy Technician
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals with complex medical or behavioral health needs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Mental:
  • Ability to maintain and sustain concentration and attention to detail while performing data entry, prescription processing, and quality control tasks
  • Strong problem-solving skills to resolve third-party rejections and workflow exceptions
  • Ability to interpret prescription information, medical abbreviations, and insurance requirements accurately
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to follow established procedures and adhere to state, federal, and organizational regulations

Physical:
  • Prolonged periods of standing throughout the shift
  • Frequent walking within the pharmacy and work areas
  • Ability to pull, push, lift, and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Ability and willingness to perform tasks which include pushing, pulling, grasping, and lifting with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for data entry, prescription preparation, and pharmacy equipment operation

Working Conditions:
  • Retail or outpatient pharmacy setting with frequent interaction with patients, healthcare providers, staff, and vendors
  • Fast-paced environment requiring continuous attention to workflow, accuracy, safety, and customer service

Education, Certification, and Licensure
  • Certification: Must maintain an active Pharmacy Technician Certification
