What does an orchestra director do?

As an orchestra director is separate from a conductor, in that a conductor leads performances and a director oversees the administrative duties necessary to an orchestra’s success. As an orchestra director, your responsibilities include developing a program for concerts and holding practice sessions for the musicians. You organize and promote an ensemble of orchestra musicians and are responsible for selecting and curating the musical program for every season. Other duties include budget planning, assisting with the orchestra’s fundraising efforts, and promoting community awareness for the orchestra by attending social functions with donors, participating in outreach and educational events, and contributing to promotional materials. You schedule auditions for new players and make final hiring decisions.

What does an orchestra director do?

An Orchestra Director, also known as a conductor or music director, leads and manages an orchestra's musical performances and rehearsals. They choose the repertoire, interpret scores, and guide musicians to achieve a unified and expressive performance. The director is responsible for setting artistic direction, collaborating with soloists, and ensuring that all sections of the orchestra work together harmoniously. Additionally, they may be involved in educational outreach and community engagement to promote orchestral music.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an orchestra director?

To thrive as an Orchestra Director, you need advanced musical expertise, strong conducting abilities, and typically a degree in music or conducting. Familiarity with musical notation software, score analysis tools, and rehearsal management systems is often required. Leadership, effective communication, and the ability to inspire and unify musicians are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable an Orchestra Director to interpret musical works, coordinate large groups, and deliver cohesive, high-quality performances.

What are some common challenges orchestra directors face when leading a diverse group of musicians?

Orchestra Directors often encounter the challenge of uniting musicians with varying skill levels, backgrounds, and personalities to achieve a cohesive sound. Balancing rehearsal time to address sections that need extra attention, while keeping the entire ensemble engaged, is a frequent task. Directors also work to interpret and communicate the composer’s vision, requiring strong leadership and excellent communication skills to inspire and motivate the group. Navigating these challenges successfully helps build a positive, collaborative environment and leads to compelling performances.

Job description

As our Account Director, Scale, you will...

Serve as the primary orchestrator of MERGE's internal expertise and the main engine behind growing your assigned book of business, with a clear focus on expanding our Adobe technology services footprint. You'll own senior, management-level client relationships, bringing proactive, compelling points of view that translate client goals into signed, revenue-generating work. Blending strategic account leadership with hands-on execution, agility, and humility, you bring the proven ability to mobilize cross-functional teams, spark growth, and build lasting, trust-based partnerships.

What You'll Do
  • Drive Revenue Growth & Account Expansion: Own and hit growth targets within your book of business, focusing on expanding Adobe-related tech services engagements alongside broader multi-service opportunities.
  • Coordinate Cross-Functional Teams: Bring Industry, Solutions, Partner, and Operations teams together seamlessly to build compelling, client-specific proposals.
  • Facilitate Proposals & SOWs: Lead the drafting and refinement of SOWs and proposals alongside Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Project Management, ensuring scope, pricing, and value narratives hit the mark before delivery.
  • Shape Account Strategy & Planning: Build and maintain annual account plans centered on upselling, cross-selling, and delivering clear business value with defined revenue milestones.
  • Expand Creative & Brand Footprint: Uncover and cultivate opportunities to bring MERGE's creative and brand capabilities into existing accounts, positioning us for Agency of Record (AOR) status.
  • Manage Senior Relationships: Serve as a trusted partner for clients, bringing forward proactive recommendations that position MERGE as a strategic growth partner rather than just a vendor.
  • Align with Partners: Maintain a sharp understanding of the Adobe partner ecosystem, collaborating with Partner teams to spot co-sell and expansion opportunities.
  • Keep Track of Pipeline & Forecasting: Track and report on account-level pipeline, bookings, and revenue progress against growth targets with accuracy and clarity.
  • Adapt with Agility: Pivot seamlessly in a fast-paced environment, responding to changing client needs and market shifts without missing a beat.
  • Lead with Humility: Approach every cross-functional team and client interaction as a true partner - listening intently, leaving ego at the door, and prioritizing joint success.
Who You Are
  • Experienced & Capable Leader: You bring 7+ years of experience in account management, client services, or business development within a digital agency, systems integrator, or professional services environment.
  • Proven Revenue Growth Record: You have demonstrated success upselling and cross-selling multi-service engagements (including creative, brand, or tech services) within existing accounts.
  • Strategic Proposal Lead: You carry a strong track record of leading SOW and proposal development, from scoping and pricing to articulating clear business value.
  • Relationship Builder: You possess proven ability to build and nurture senior-level client relationships, including C-suite and VP-level stakeholders.
  • Agile Collaborator: You excel at cross-functional teamwork, comfortably mobilizing SMEs, Solutions, Partner, and Operations teams through influence, adaptability, and open communication.
  • Business-Savvy Communicator: You possess sharp business acumen and excellent written/verbal communication skills, making complex presentations and pitch moments feel effortless and engaging.
  • Humble Team Player: You operate independently in fast-paced environments while maintaining a collaborative, humble attitude focused on shared team wins.
Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Experience Cloud ecosystem (e.g., AEM, Adobe Analytics, Adobe Target, Adobe Campaign) or equivalent platform/service line growth experience.
  • Experience identifying or supporting AOR/creative expansion opportunities within existing client relationships.
