How much do oral surgeon jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for oral surgeon in the United States is $339,174.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $303,000.00 and $400,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an oral surgeon?

Oral surgeons, also known as oral and maxillofacial surgeons, are specialized dental professionals trained to perform surgical procedures involving the mouth, jaw, face, and related structures. They handle complex extractions, such as wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, corrective jaw surgery, and treatment of facial injuries or oral diseases. Oral surgeons undergo additional years of hospital-based training after dental school to gain expertise in both dentistry and surgery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an oral surgeon?

To thrive as an Oral Surgeon, you need advanced surgical skills, in-depth knowledge of oral and maxillofacial anatomy, and completion of dental school followed by a specialized oral surgery residency and board certification. Proficiency with surgical instruments, anesthesia delivery systems, and digital imaging technologies is essential. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure patient safety, successful surgical outcomes, and effective collaboration with other dental and medical professionals.

What do oral surgeons do?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, defects, and injuries to the head, neck, face, mouth, jaws, and oral tissues. This specialty is internationally recognized and, in some countries, even requires a dual degree in medicine and dentistry.

What are some common challenges oral surgeons face in their daily practice?

Oral surgeons often encounter challenges such as managing complex surgical cases, dealing with anxious or medically compromised patients, and coordinating care with referring dentists and other specialists. The fast-paced environment may require quick decision-making and adaptability, especially when unexpected complications arise during procedures. Additionally, balancing administrative responsibilities with hands-on clinical work can be demanding, making time management and strong communication skills essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Oral Surgeon vs Endodontist?

AspectOral SurgeonEndodontist
Required CredentialsDental degree, Oral Surgery residency, medical licenseDental degree, Endodontic specialty certification
Work EnvironmentHospitals, surgical centers, dental clinicsDental offices, clinics
Common ProceduresWisdom teeth removal, jaw surgeries, trauma repairRoot canal treatments, pulp therapy
Industry UsageOften involved in surgical and complex proceduresFocus on root and pulp-related treatments

While both Oral Surgeons and Endodontists are dental specialists, Oral Surgeons handle surgical procedures like wisdom teeth removal and jaw surgeries, requiring additional medical training. Endodontists focus on root canal therapy and pulp treatments, typically working within dental offices. Their training overlaps in dental education, but their specialties differ in procedures and work settings.

Are oral surgeons in high demand?

Oral surgeons are in high demand due to the specialized nature of their work, which includes performing complex dental surgeries and managing oral health issues. The profession typically offers strong job stability and competitive salaries, especially in areas with growing populations and increased access to dental care. Certification and advanced training are required to practice in this field.

We are actively seeking an Oral Surgeon to join our dental team on a PRN basis. This is a moonlighting opportunity designed to fit the schedule you already have - not replace it. Responsibilities:

Our oral surgery practice has:

  • DentaPro software
  • Digital x-ray and Panorex units
  • Dedicated dental assistants trained to support oral surgery procedures
  • Yearly OSHA, HIPAA, and Emergency Management training
Oral Surgeon responsibilities include:
  • Perform third molar extractions, including impacted cases
  • Provide surgical and complex extractions across the dentition as clinically appropriate
  • Deliver oral surgery care efficiently and safely in a well-supported dental environment
  • Partner with our dental office teams to ensure compliant, patient-centered care
Qualifications:

We expect our Oral Surgeon to have:

  • DDS or DMD from a CODA-accredited dental program
  • Completion of a CODA-accredited Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency
  • Active dental license in the state of practice, or eligibility for licensure
  • Current BLS, ACLS, DEA, and applicable state credentials
  • Compassion and a strong desire to provide oral surgery care in a community dental setting
