How much do full time oral surgeon jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time oral surgeon in the United States is $339,174.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $303,000.00 and $400,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time oral surgeon, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Oral Surgeon, you need a dental degree (DDS or DMD), completion of an accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, and board certification or eligibility. Expertise with surgical instruments, anesthesia administration, imaging systems, and electronic health records is required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and patient management skills set outstanding oral surgeons apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring patient safety, delivering high-quality surgical care, and building trust with patients and colleagues.

What is the difference between Full Time Oral Surgeon vs General Dentist?

AspectFull Time Oral SurgeonGeneral Dentist
CredentialsDDS/DMD + Oral Surgery residencyDDS/DMD
Work EnvironmentSpecialized surgical clinics, hospitalsPrivate practices, clinics
Job FocusComplex surgeries, wisdom teeth removal, implantsPreventive care, fillings, basic procedures
Industry UsageHigh in hospitals and specialty clinicsCommon in private practices and community clinics

Full Time Oral Surgeons specialize in complex surgical procedures requiring advanced training, often working in hospitals or specialty clinics. General Dentists provide a broad range of dental care in private practices. While both roles require a DDS/DMD degree, oral surgeons undergo additional residency training, focusing on surgical interventions.

What does a full-time oral surgeon do?

A full-time oral surgeon is a specialized dental professional who diagnoses and performs surgical procedures related to the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. Their duties often include extracting teeth, performing corrective jaw surgery, treating facial injuries, and placing dental implants. They work closely with dentists and other healthcare providers to manage complex oral health issues. Oral surgeons also play a critical role in diagnosing oral cancers and other diseases affecting the facial region. Most oral surgeons work in hospitals, private practices, or dental clinics, and require advanced training beyond dental school.

What are some common challenges oral surgeons face when transitioning to a full-time hospital or group practice setting?

Full-time oral surgeons often encounter challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced workflow, balancing a high volume of complex cases, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including anesthesiologists and restorative dentists. Managing hospital protocols and documentation requirements can also be an adjustment, especially for those used to private practice. However, these environments offer opportunities to handle a wider case variety and develop advanced surgical skills while benefiting from team-based support.
