What Are the Responsibilities of an Oracle Database Developer?

The responsibilities and duties of an Oracle database developer are to design and implement data storage and business enterprise solutions using Oracle products. In this career, you typically work as part of a large development team and support other departments in your organization by assessing their data storage and organizational needs and developing projects that meet those needs. As an Oracle database developer, you also help your organization to oversee data migration to Oracle servers and ensure that workers’ access to the information remains unchanged.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Oracle Database Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Oracle Database Developer, you need strong SQL and PL/SQL programming skills, experience with database design, and typically a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with Oracle Database tools (such as Oracle SQL Developer, RMAN, and Data Pump), and certifications like Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate are highly valued. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help developers solve complex problems and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building robust, efficient databases that support business operations and ensure data integrity.

What are some common challenges Oracle Database Developers face when working on large-scale enterprise systems?

Oracle Database Developers working on large-scale enterprise systems often encounter challenges such as optimizing complex queries for performance, managing schema changes without disrupting existing applications, and ensuring data consistency across distributed environments. Collaboration with other teams, such as application developers and system administrators, is essential to address integration and deployment issues. Staying updated with Oracle’s evolving tools and features is also crucial to maintaining efficient and secure database systems.

What does an Oracle Database Developer do?

An Oracle Database Developer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing databases using Oracle technologies. They create database structures, write and optimize SQL queries, develop PL/SQL procedures, and ensure the integrity and security of data. Additionally, they may work on performance tuning, troubleshooting, and supporting application development teams by integrating database solutions. Their role is crucial in maintaining efficient, scalable, and reliable databases for organizations.

Job description

ADP is seeking a Lead Application Developer to drive end-to-end solution delivery across our application portfolio. This role combines hands-on development with technical leadership-guiding design, code quality, data integration, and reporting capabilities across a complex ecosystem that includes .NET, SQL Server, Oracle/Oracle APEX, Salesforce, and ADP data sources. The ideal candidate is a strong problem solver who can translate business needs into scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Here's what you can expect on a typical day:

  • Own solution delivery across the full SDLC: requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and support.
  • Design and build .NET applications (VB.NET, C#, ASP.NET, .NET Core) with clean architecture and testable patterns.
  • Develop robust data layers using SQL Server (T-SQL queries, views, functions, stored procedures) and Oracle (PL/SQL) and build apps in APEX where appropriate.
  • Create dashboards and reports using SSRS and/or other BI tools; establish data models and govern data refresh and access.
  • Integrate systems via REST APIs (consume and orchestrate), including Salesforce and internal/external services.
  • Leverage ADP data (e.g., Databricks, Oracle, DB2, SQL Server instances) and apply ADP RS SORs understanding for authoritative data sourcing and data lineage.
  • Author high-quality technical documentation (solution designs, data dictionaries, specs, deployment guides).
  • Partner with product owners and business SMEs to clarify requirements, size work, and prioritize backlogs.
  • Champion best practices in security, performance, reliability, and observability.

TO SUCCEED IN THIS ROLE:

  • You'll have a Bachelor's degree OR equivalent.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, including lead developer responsibilities.
  • .NET expertise: VB.NET, C#, ASP.NET, and .NET Core for APIs, web apps, and services.
  • SQL Server proficiency: Expert-level TR-SQL (queries, indexing strategies, stored procedures, performance tuning).
  • Oracle experience, including APEX application development preferred.
  • Reporting & BI: SSRS and/or comparable BI tools used to build operational dashboards.
  • Salesforce experience (data model familiarity, API integration, authentication flows).
  • Data ecosystem knowledge in ADP: awareness of core data sources such as Databricks, Oracle, DB2, SQL Server instances, and how to design integrations with them.
  • ADP RS SORs understanding and how systems-of-record impact integration, data quality, and reporting.
  • REST API consumption: authentication (OAuth 2.0/Bearer), pagination, error handling, and resilience patterns.
  • Technical writing capabilities: architecture diagrams, sequence flows, ADRs, and runbooks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CI/CD (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar), automated testing, and infrastructure-as-code basics.
  • Familiarity with Databricks (Spark SQL, Delta Lake concepts) and ETL/ELT patterns.
  • Performance tuning across application, database, and API layers; profiling and observability (App Insights, logging/metrics).
  • Data governance and security best practices (PII handling, RBAC, encryption at-rest/in-transit).
  • Exposure to SSIS, Power BI, or other enterprise BI platforms.
  • Prior experience integrating ADP products and datasets at enterprise scale preferred.
  • Core Competencies
  • Systems Thinking: Connects application design to data lineage, reporting needs, and enterprise standards.
  • Team-Oriented: Elevates team capability through collaboration and cross-functional partnership
  • Communication: Converts complex technical topics into clear, concise documentation and stakeholder updates.
  • Delivery Excellence: Plans iteratively, hits milestones, and manages risk with transparency.
  • Quality Mindset: Automated tests, code reviews, secure-by-design patterns, and measurable SLIs/SLOs.
  • Disclaimer: THIS IS NOT A PEOPLE LEADER POSITION; THIS IS AN INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTOR ROLE.
