Responsibilities: 

Responsible for the care of patients during operation.  Responsible for determining, with physician how to care for the patient during their procedure. The RN will perform moderate to complex assessments, interventions, decision-making, and level of monitoring and execute written and verbal orders received from physicians and licensed independent practitioners. Maintain OR area in a clean and proper environment for patient care. Maintain emergency equipment and understand use of such equipment. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of and compliance with safety policies and procedures, recognizes safety hazards, and initiate appropriate corrective and/or preventative measures.
Duties of the position: 

1.      Conducts an individualized patient assessment, interviews and assists in determining safety of patients procedure. 
2.      Effectively communicates with pre-operative nurse patient information, communicate patient information to OR team patients procedure, allergies and needs. Effectively communicate to recovery nurse(s) patient procedure and information pertinent to the patients successful recovery. 
3.      Asses in OR fire risk of procedure, be able to conduct a proper patient time-out. 
4.      Be an advocate for the patient’s safety and the sterility of the procedure.  
5.      Understand the roles of the staff in the operating room and enforce the performance only within the scope of their designated/trained practice. 
6.      Properly prep the patients.  Understand what equipment will be used for specific cases (e.g. scd machines/ bovie/ suction machines, etc). 
7.      Perform proper counts for needles, sponges etc. 
8.      Develops a nurse care plan individualized for the patient that is age specific and collaborative with the interdisciplinary health teams. 
9.      Performs therapeutic nursing interventions established in the plan of care for the patient and accompanying family members, friends, and significant others. 
10.  Administer treatments and medications as ordered by the physicians or licensed independent practitioners and according to establish protocols (policies and procedures). 
11.  Document patient assessment and findings, physical/biopsychosocial responses to nursing interventions and progress toward goal completion and problem solving.  
12.  Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality, complying with HIPPA privacy and security rules. 
13.  Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that reflects cultural and sensitivity. 
14.  Preserves patient dignity, autonomy, privacy and rights/responsibilities
15.  Communicates hand-off information when passing patient from pre-op to operating room staff.  
16.  Performs electrocardiogram and conveys results to appropriate parties. 
17.  Complies with facility infection control policies and procedures. 
18.  Maintains biohazards and complies with OSHA protocol
19.  Ability to have a flexible schedule and work a variety of hours
20.  Effectively communicate with patients and medical personnel
21.  Contact patients and conduct a pre-operative screening.  Understand guidelines to determine if a patient is an acceptable candidate for surgery. 
22.  Obtain proper clearances, labs and paperwork for patients scheduled for surgery. 
23.  Knowledge of computer systems and document according to procedure and protocols
24.  Ability to teach patients pre-operative and post-operative care and instructions. 
25.  Review consents and properly help the patient prepare for surgery. 
26.  Review procedures and care for patients before after surgery and anesthesia; airway management, pain control, nausea control, IV maintenance, proper positioning, 
27.  Understanding and administration of postop orders.
28.  Providing medication for pain and nausea control as well as other medications per doctor’s orders.  
29.  Ensure patient has appropriate caregiver to take patient home and care for him/her.
30.  Educating caregivers of patient care once leaving the facility.
31.  Help maintaining OR area – maintenance cleaning, stocking of medical supplies as well as nutritional supplies, laundry, medications.
32.  Understanding of cost maintenance and awareness.
33.  Maintaining narcotic drug count.
34.  Emergency management of patient as needed.
35.  Understand and comply with all OSHA and biohazard standards.
36.  Scheduling staff for OR, including but not limited to: arrival times, departure times, coverage for vacations, contacting per-diem staff
37.  Help arrange surgical order and write board.  
38.  Help ensure cases are picked for upcoming surgeries, rooms terminally cleaned and supplies available. 
39.  Assist maintain supplies
40.  Help maintain implant logs, infection control logs, etc
 
 
Physical Requirements:
Good physical condition to frequently walk, bend, stoop and squat; occasionally sit, occasionally lift, carry, push, pull maximum over 50lbs with assistance.  Must be able to see, hear, speak, and use both hands to easily communicate.
 
Occupational Exposure:  
Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.

Qualifications:

·         Basic Life Support (BLS) 
·         Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
·         Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)- preferred but not required.
·         Sterile Technique and principles of aseptic technique
·         Complete necessary continuing education units to maintain an active RN license
·         Ability to pass a background check
