What is optometry part time?

Optometry part time refers to working as an optometrist but on a reduced or flexible schedule, rather than the traditional full-time hours. Part-time optometrists perform the same duties as full-time optometrists, such as conducting eye exams, diagnosing vision problems, and prescribing corrective lenses, but typically work fewer days or hours per week. This arrangement can be ideal for professionals seeking work-life balance, those nearing retirement, or individuals with other commitments. Employment opportunities for part-time optometrists may be found in private practices, retail optical stores, clinics, or mobile services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time optometrist?

To thrive as a part-time optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and expertise in eye examinations and vision care. Familiarity with diagnostic tools like autorefractors, phoropters, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and time management set outstanding practitioners apart in this role. These abilities ensure accurate diagnoses, effective patient communication, and efficient use of limited work hours for optimal patient outcomes.

What are some typical challenges faced by part-time optometrists, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time optometrists often navigate challenges such as building consistent patient relationships, staying current with practice updates, and managing a variable schedule. To address these, clear communication with clinic staff and other optometrists is essential to ensure patient continuity and seamless care. Staying organized, proactively seeking out professional development opportunities, and using digital health records can help maintain high standards of care and keep you connected with the team, even when working limited hours.

Job description

Part‑Time Optometrist (OD) – Burkeville, VA

Location: Burkeville, VA

Schedule: 2 weekdays per month (Weekdays)

Compensation: $900 per visit

Position Type: Independent Contractor (1099)

About The Opportunity

Comprehensive Mobile Care (CMC) is seeking a Part-Time Optometrist (OD) to provide care in a structured, outpatient clinic-based environment in Burkeville, VA.

This is a clinic-based role where you'll function as an extension of the clinical team within a coordinated, community-focused setting serving senior populations.

If you're looking for meaningful, mission-driven work with schedule consistency — without the overhead and administrative burden of running your own practice — this opportunity offers flexibility and professional support.

The Setting

This opportunity operates within a community-based outpatient clinic model.

• Clinic staff are on-site full time

• Organized scheduling and patient flow

• Coordinated, team-based care environment

• Value-based model focused on seniors

We manage equipment, supplies, scheduling, and billing logistics — allowing you to focus entirely on delivering high-quality vision care.

What You'll Do

• Perform comprehensive eye exams and vision assessments

• Diagnose and manage common ocular conditions within your scope of practice

• Prescribe corrective lenses and provide appropriate treatment recommendations

• Collaborate with clinic staff as part of an integrated care team

• Deliver patient-centered care in a structured outpatient setting

What Makes This Different

This is not a high-volume retail model.

Our optometrists are integrated into established clinic environments and represent Comprehensive Mobile Care directly within each partner location.

We emphasize:

• Quality over volume

• Consistency and predictability

• Administrative and logistical support

• Long-term clinic partnerships

• Ethical, mission-driven healthcare delivery

Qualifications

• Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited program

• Active Virginia optometry license

• Experience treating senior populations preferred

• Strong clinical judgment and patient communication skills

• Comfortable practicing in outpatient clinic environments

Schedule

• 2 weekdays per month

• Typical hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

• No nights

• No weekends

• No billing or administrative responsibilities

Comprehensive Mobile Care (CMC) is a family-founded healthcare organization with over 25 years of experience increasing access to care for senior and underserved communities across 20+ states.
