What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Optometrist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and a solid understanding of ocular diseases and vision care. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, digital diagnostic tools, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Excellent communication skills, empathy, and adaptability are essential for building rapport with patients remotely and delivering clear care instructions. These skills ensure accurate virtual assessments, patient satisfaction, and compliance with regulatory standards in remote optometric practice.

What are some common challenges faced by virtual optometrists when providing remote eye care, and how can they be addressed?

Virtual optometrists often encounter challenges such as limited ability to perform certain in-depth eye examinations remotely and difficulties in assessing subtle ocular conditions without specialized equipment. To address these, virtual optometrists typically use high-quality video platforms, leverage patient-submitted images, and work closely with in-person clinics for follow-up care when necessary. Strong communication skills and clear instructions to patients are essential for obtaining accurate histories and ensuring effective management. Additionally, staying updated on telehealth technology and maintaining compliance with privacy regulations is crucial for success in this evolving field.

Both Virtual Optometry and Telehealth Optometry involve remote eye care services performed by licensed optometrists. Both roles require similar credentials and are used within the same industry to expand access to eye care remotely.

What is virtual optometry?

Virtual optometry refers to the use of digital technology and telehealth platforms to provide eye care services remotely. This can include virtual eye exams, consultations, follow-ups, and even some vision screenings conducted via video calls or specialized apps. Patients can connect with licensed optometrists from the comfort of their homes, making eye care more accessible, especially for those in remote areas. However, some tests and treatments may still require in-person visits to ensure comprehensive eye health assessment.

Job description

Opportunity In Private Optometry Practice

We are a private optometrist owned and operated practice established in 2003. We do NOT offer retail hours, production pressure, or limited autonomy and clinical support. We pride ourselves on providing balance and personal fulfillment for our team and an elevated experience for our patients. We have built something different and unique.

Why join us?

Practice the way you want to practice.

  • No evenings. No weekends. Real work-life balance.
  • Full support team: highly skilled technicians + scribes so you can focus on doctoring, not data entry.
  • Modern, well-equipped practice with advanced diagnostic and treatment technology.
  • Busy, established patient base with strong word-of-mouth and a reputation for care.
  • Culture matters here: positive, team-oriented, and service-driven. We invest in training and systems to make the patient experience exceptional.

What you'll do:

You'll have the opportunity to practice full-scope optometry in a setting that supports high-quality care:

  • Routine and medical optometry (with strong tech support). Our techs are trained to assist you in providing the best care you can give to your patient. You will have a scribe with you at all times for each patient that will assist you in charting as well as intra- and inter-office communication to ensure continuity of care. Every patient receives Optos/retinal imaging where you can truly provide each patient with comprehensive care.
  • Treat your patients how you want to treat them. We have an OCT and a Visual Field (Humphrey and Virtual) so you can manage retinal abnormalities, glaucoma and other neurological conditions.
  • Specialty services available in-house (dry eye/ocular surface), specialty contact lenses, myopia management, optical boutique). We have invested in all the latest technology (IPL, RF, LLT) for dry eye and MGD, LensStar for Myopia Management, and a laser to provide elevated access for our patients.
  • Interested in aesthetics and skin care? We have branded our own skin care line and have partnered with an injector and an esthetician for patients who want the extra aesthetic benefits they can offer.
  • A collaborative environment with doctors and staff aligned around outcomes and patient experience. Our doctors work together to discuss difficult and interesting cases which keeps patient care fun and exciting!

We'll work with the right candidate on structure and fit—whether you're seeking:

  • Full-time with a consistent schedule, or
  • A flexible arrangement that supports life outside the office

You'll enjoy a range of benefits, including:

  • We offer a competitive package that's designed around the whole picture:
  • Competitive compensation (discussed based on experience and schedule)
  • Paid time off + paid holidays
  • Health insurance options
  • Retirement plan
  • Relocation package/Signing Bonus
  • CE Allowance
  • A practice environment that supports longevity and sustainable pace

Why you'll love Tidewater (Hampton Roads):

  • Minutes to Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks vibe—beach days, boating, water sports
  • Ranked as one of the Top 50 Best Places to Live in the U.S. by Money Magazine in 2020, Chesapeake offers a perfect blend of urban convenience and rural charm.
  • Great local food scene, breweries, and family-friendly communities
  • Minutes to the oceanfront and quick trips to Richmond, DC, or the mountains
  • A region with strong growth and a steady population base
