What do optometrists do?

Optometrists are healthcare professionals who specialize in examining eyes for vision problems, prescribing corrective lenses, and detecting eye diseases. They perform vision tests, diagnose conditions such as nearsightedness and astigmatism, and provide treatment plans, which may include prescribing glasses or contact lenses. Optometrists can also detect signs of health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure during eye exams and refer patients to other specialists if needed. They play a vital role in maintaining overall eye health and preventing vision loss.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Optometrist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and a solid understanding of vision science and ocular health. Familiarity with diagnostic equipment such as autorefractors, retinal imaging systems, and electronic health records (EHRs) is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving abilities help build patient trust and ensure accurate diagnoses. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering effective eye care, managing patient relationships, and maintaining practice efficiency.

What is the difference between Optometric vs Ophthalmologist?

AspectOptometricOphthalmologist
CredentialsDoctor of Optometry (OD)Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) with ophthalmology specialization
Work EnvironmentOptometry clinics, retail optical stores, healthcare officesHospitals, surgical centers, specialized eye clinics
Scope of PracticeEye exams, vision correction, diagnosing certain eye conditions, prescribing glasses and contact lensesMedical and surgical treatment of eye diseases, complex eye surgeries, diagnosis of systemic conditions affecting eyes

Optometrists primarily focus on vision care, eye exams, and non-invasive treatments, while ophthalmologists are medical doctors who perform surgeries and treat complex eye diseases. Both play vital roles in eye health but differ in training, scope, and procedures performed.

What are some common challenges optometrists face in managing patient flow during busy clinic days?

Optometrists often encounter challenges in balancing thorough patient care with efficient appointment scheduling, especially during high-volume clinic days. Managing patient flow requires strong organizational skills, effective communication with support staff, and the ability to adapt quickly to unexpected changes such as walk-ins or emergencies. Utilizing electronic health records and delegating tasks to technicians can help streamline processes, but time management remains crucial. Collaboration with administrative and clinical team members is key to maintaining both high-quality care and a positive patient experience.

Are you a well-rounded, California-licensed Optometrist with excellent clinical skills who enjoys caring for a diverse group of patients? Are you looking for an opportunity to leverage your talents in an innovative environment and collaborate with other talented professionals? If you have a passion for delivering top-notch eye care services and you're looking for a full-time opportunity in the beautiful Sacramento area, this is the perfect place for you.

Why join us?

EYEcenter Optometric's mission is to provide the most personalized, distinctive eye care experience in California. Founded in 1960 by Dr. Fred Fuerst, this practice has grown to serve the Sacramento Valley and Sierra Nevada Foothills communities. The combination of cutting-edge technologies and a caring team of professionals has fueled this practice's expansion in Northern California, with locations in Citrus Heights, Folsom, Gold River, Rocklin, and Midtown Sacramento. To support ongoing business growth, EYEcenter Optometric is seeking two full-time Optometrists.
What you'll do:
As a valued member of the EYEcenter Optometric team, you'll practice in a modern, state-of-the-art clinic serving the diverse Sacramento area community, providing comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages and conditions. You'll utilize advanced diagnostic technology, including retinal cameras, OCT, visual fields, and automated refracting systems, while supported by a highly trained team. This is a full-time position, working five days a week for a total of 40 hours. Locations and hours will vary, with coverage across ECO Citrus Heights, ECO Gold River, ECO Folsom, ECO Rocklin, and ECO Sacramento. You'll have the opportunity to educate patients about ocular health and recommend vision-enhancing solutions, all while working in a collaborative and innovative environment.
Who you are:
You're an ambitious and compassionate Optometrist who strives to consistently exceed patient expectations while providing personalized and individualized care to ensure excellent eye health and vision care. You enjoy caring for a diverse patient population, and you're an excellent listener who genuinely cares about patients. You consistently stay up-to-date with industry trends, new products, and lens technologies to ensure patients are aware of the visual solutions that will meet their individual needs. This position is open to both recent graduates and experienced professionals. The practice is also offering competitive benefits, including medical insurance, paid time off, production bonus, malpractice insurance, continuing education allowance, and a relocation stipend.
Why you'll love Sacramento:
Located in America's farm-to-fork capital, Sacramento offers local artisanal coffee and craft brews, picturesque neighborhoods, freshwater rivers and lakes, and culturally rich activities and events. One of its greatest advantages is the ideal weather—hot summers with low humidity and cool nights, plus mild winters and subtle weather changes that allow the changing of seasons. Its proximity to some of California's most visited destinations—Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Napa, Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz, and Yosemite, to name a few—makes it an ideal place to call home.
Special note about this opportunity:
This is a career opportunity with a practice owned by VSP Ventures, a VSP Global Company. While VSP Global is helping VSP Ventures practices recruit qualified applicants, the hiring decision and acceptance of this position is solely between the hiring practice and the applicant.
