What are options in finance?

Options are financial derivatives that give the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset—such as stocks—at a specified price before a certain date. There are two main types: call options, which allow buying the asset, and put options, which allow selling it. Options are commonly used for hedging, speculation, or income strategies in investment portfolios. Their value is influenced by factors like the underlying asset price, volatility, time to expiration, and interest rates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an options trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Options Trader, you need a solid understanding of financial markets, options pricing, and risk management, often supported by a degree in finance, economics, or mathematics. Familiarity with trading platforms, financial modeling tools like Excel, and certifications such as the Series 7 or CFA are commonly required. Analytical thinking, quick decision-making, and strong stress management help traders excel in fast-paced, high-stakes environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial to effectively analyze market trends, manage risk, and maximize trading profitability.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the acquisition, advocacy, and retention of high-volume options traders by building and maintaining a pipeline of prospects.

  • Demonstrate and promote Public's API, AI Agents, and options tooling to traders and gather feedback to inform product development.

  • Identify and engage with high-potential options traders, including working with external partners if necessary, to increase trading volume on the platform.

Job description

About Public

Public is building the Agentic Brokerage. Focused on serious investors who use AI and a vast variety of asset classes, from stocks and bonds to crypto and options, to build their portfolios. Launched in 2019, Public has been trusted with billions of assets from retail investors.

What you'll do:

You'll own the acquisition, advocacy, and retention of high-volume options traders at Public by working across every function and leveraging every asset we have to bring them onto the platform. That means building and maintaining a pipeline of high-potential prospects from both Public-generated and outbound channels, and, where useful, identifying and working with external partners to hit your goals. Options volume is your north star: you'll figure out where sophisticated flow lives, meet traders where they are, and do whatever it takes (within regulatory limits) to bring that volume to Public.

Public is the Agentic Brokerage, and options traders are among the most sophisticated users of our platform. You'll be the connective tissue between our product and the trader community by evangelizing our AI Agents, API access, and options tooling to the traders who'll push them hardest, then channeling what you hear back to product and engineering. You'll need to know our API and agentic capabilities well enough to demo them credibly and win over traders who build their own systems.

This is a role for someone who works well independently and enjoys owning their approach. You'll have real autonomy and a clear target, with the flexibility to figure out the path that works best.

What we're looking for:
  • 5+ years experience working in a premier consumer finance and/or capital markets organization
  • Series 7, Series 4 and/or 63/66 (or immediate path to completing)
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in options trading: single-leg and multi-leg strategies, spreads, volatility, and the mechanics of how serious options traders actually operate
  • Track record of sales and/or direct customer acquisition success
  • Experience working within regulatory compliance constraints to deliver business outcomes
  • Ability to build processes and approaches for acquiring clients from a blank slate
  • Creative problem solver on behalf of company and clients
  • Ability to represent the firm and speak publicly, including in options-trader communities
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Active Public member and options trader (sign up today!)

Bonus Points:

  • Deep understanding of all tools and asset classes in an active trader's arsenal, with options as your specialty
  • Existing relationships or credibility within options-trading communities (Discord, X/FinTwit, Reddit, trading meetups, etc.)
  • Experience working with or selling to API-based and high-frequency options traders
  • Equity capital markets, trading, and/or research experience
  • Experience with markets and financial data (e.g., exchange data, options chains, fundamental data)
  • Ability to use modern AI tools to scale your productivity and impact
  • Fluency with data (and interest in learning) SQL and/or Python programming languages

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Uncapped bonus structure based on sales performance
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans
  • Generous PTO and parental leave policy
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Opportunities for career growth and professional development
